DAVID 'Trigger' Elliott shot a course record as he etched his name on the Nottinghamshire County Open Championship trophy.

The 33-year-old Chilwell Manor amateur shot rounds of 66 and 70 over his home course for a two shot win in the event which boasted the top 20 club professional and the top amateurs who qualified through their respective stroke play championship.

He finished two shots clear of professional Craig Swinburn (Notts), with Lee Clarke (Beeston Fields) a further two shots back in third.

"It's incredible, I can't believe I've actually won the Open," he said. "The course record made it special as I knew what I was doing. I had worked it all out. I knew that the course record was 67.

"On the 16th, which is a par five, I hit a drive and a sand iron and then three putted.

"I parred 17 and then sank a 35ft putt on the last for a birdie to do it."

Elliott had been playing well over the last four weeks. He and Ross Overton won the Notts Foursomes Championship and along with his boss, Phil Moore, won his club's captain's day with 44 points.

He led by three shots after the first and had the luxury of knowing he could take a six on the last in his second round and still win.

"I found out that Craig had shot 69 when I was on the 15th," said Elliott. "I birdied the 16th and I knew going down the last I could take a six and win.

"I took a five and I was right happy.
