A NEW five-storey car park at Nottingham station was officially opened yesterday.

The car park, built by Vinci Construction, was opened by representatives of East Midlands Trains, Network Rail and Nottingham City Council.

The 950-space car park in Queens Road is covered by CCTV and an automatic number plate recognition system for improved security.

David Horne, managing director of East Midlands Trains, said: "This is a great and convenient new facility that provides a welcome addition to Nottingham's architecture."

The second phase of work to turn the station into a transport hub is likely to start at the end of the summer.

It will include restoring grade two listed buildings, upgrading information displays, the ticket office, shops, cafes and waiting areas and a new concourse. The entire project will be completed in 2014.

“Doesn't really sort out the fact that it is a nightmare trying to pick anyone up from the station if you don't want to park - contending with taxi's, most of the bays are disabled, it's chaos and a joke. I greet my guests totally flustered. Not a great welcome to Nottingham.”

“Just when you think that the City Council cheerleaders can't stoop any lower, they do and somehow saying that a new car park resembles a destroyed building is conflated with people being killed in a terrorist attack.

Next they'll be telling us that anyone that doesn't like the building is a racist.”

“Strangely, I agree with you entirely: it's a car park. So what reality check is required?

My only argument is with sickening references to Ground Zero, and silly ideologically-driven remarks about the City Council being a car-hating organization, which are worth disagreeing with.”

“is 'aesthetically pleasing' a universal concept?

oh well, some people on here dont like it (its worth noting that they dont seem to like much in nottingham anyway), some people do

and the vast vast vast majority couldnt give a toss. because its a car park. that looks a bit better than a 70's car park.

that fact that once again, it has spawned this pathetic little tango:

:really pays testament to the fact some of you really need a reality check.”

“I agree it looks like a multi storey car park, albeit with bits of coloured plywood stuck to the side of it, but surely, when you claim to be trying to regenerate an area, you could design and build something slightly more aesthetically pleasing?
If you're really sad, like me, why not take a quick look at new multi storey car park designs on Google images? Some of them are quite pleasing to the eye (if you like that sort of thing).
As Jim Bowen might have said, "come and see what we could've had."”

    “magpie1983

HS2 to Leeds hasn't been passed and current outline is for a route avoiding any city centres and for it to go through a 'parkway' station between Derby and Nottingham.

    Agree on the crass name.”
