THE chairman of Broxtowe Conservatives had a chunk of his finger bitten off by a dog when canvassing in Beeston.

Bob Lilley was rushed to hospital after the dog clenched its jaw around his finger after he put a leaflet through a letterbox.

Mr Lilley, who has not made a formal complaint about the attack, in Dennis Avenue about two weeks ago, said: "I bent down to put this through the letter box, it's always the letter boxes on the floor you need to be aware of, and the dog tried to pull me through the letter box. He had the end of my finger.

"I had to pull myself away from the dog.

"I just pulled my finger out – it was an instant reaction."

Mr Lilley wrapped his little finger, which was missing flesh about the size of a nail on one side, in a handkerchief and went to a local shop.

"It didn't bleed straight away, there was a time gap, we went into a shop and it really started to bleed," he said.

"I'm still having it dressed now, it's made a mess out of the finger."

He believes letter boxes should be standardised in the UK, so they are all outside the house like they are in America, or external in some way.

Despite his ordeal, Mr Lilley insists that Labour's proposal to introduce an insurance scheme for dog owners to compensate the victims of attacks is "nonsense".

He said a dog owners' insurance scheme was not the answe5r "I think that's nonsense, if you think of all the old dears that have dogs," he said

"And the people that breed dogs would not take a blind bit of notice and it will be the innocent that pay."

The insurance proposal is one of numerous measures set out by Labour in a consultation document to change the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Ministers have said it should give people more protection and will determine who owns dangerous dogs.

    “Wow....

No wonder the dog bite the daft mans finger.

Did you see the frightening picture on the leaflet he was pushing through the poor dogs letter box.

You don't need to tell children about the scary monster hiding in the wardrobe.

    No

    No

    No

just show them the picture of the Broxtowe PPC.

Gee gods even I would wet me pants.

If I saw that fiend in person coming up my drive I would throw a used babies nappy at them.”

“I'm sorry that Mr Lilley got injured in this way, though you'd think he'd know by now that you don't stick your fingers through a letterbox. I'm pleased that he, correctly, does not appear to blame the dog for defending its territory but not so keen on the idea of external letterboxes for the security reasons already mentioned. He's right to dislike low level letterboxes though, and surely there could be a minimum height from ground requirement for them? As for insurance, that wouldn't do a great deal of good in dealing with dangerous, status dogs and I would prefer some kind of dog control zoning in areas with specific problems rather than a blanket scheme covering the whole country, most of which doesn't have an issue with dangerous dogs.”

“At first I thought this was a funny story, but then I saw the picture of the scary dog through the letterbox. It should be put down now.”

“l am sick of people putting crxp through my letter box, even putting a sign asking them not to, seems to have no effect. Perhaps putting mouse traps inside would help, putting a sign outside to warn, but the councillor got what he asked for. If people want to know what they're standing for go to their meetings. Wast of time because you won't learn anything, they'll tell you the truth when they're in power.”
