Thieving social worker is struck off
A SOCIAL worker who stole nearly £20,000 from the bank account of an elderly stroke victim has been struck off.
Peter Tennant, 54, of Long Eaton, stole money from pensioner Lorraine Rennie while working as her social worker for Sheffield City Council.
Investigators found he had taken £19,933 from the 65-year-old by making withdrawals and transferring funds to his bank account – just two months after he had been issued a cash card.
Tennant was jailed for 30 months at Sheffield Crown Court in May after admitting fraud and misconduct in a public place.
His thieving left Miss Rennie unable to pay for food, leaving carers to pay for her groceries on a number of occasions.
At a hearing yesterday, General Social Care Council chairman Minna Nathoo said Tennant's actions were a "gross breach of trust" and "far too serious" to allow him to continue as a social worker.
