Notts County 2 Forest 1
SVEN-Goran Eriksson saw Notts County beat rivals Nottingham Forest 2-1 in a friendly at Meadow Lane today.
The Magpies' new director of football received a rapturous reception from home fans when he walked out on the pitch before kick-off.
He watched his first game from the directors' box in the Derek Pavis Stand.
New strikers Luke Rodgers and Lee Hughes made themselves instant heroes with the County fans with second-half goals, while Lewis McGugan netted for the Reds.
The game was delayed by almost 15 minutes as supporters still poured into the stadium at 3pm.
In front of a bumper crowd, the opening stages were frantic and full blooded but neither side created any chances to break the deadlock.
McGugan launched a threatening attack on 16 minutes, intercepting a pass from Mike Edwards just inside the County half.
He quickly gave the ball to Robert Earnshaw and continued his run into the penalty area, but the Wales striker's return pass was too strong and went out harmlessly for a goal-kick.
Notts gifted the visitors another chance minutes later when captain John Thompson dawdled on the ball and was dispossessed by Dele Adebola.
The big striker held him off as he broke into the box and drove a low cross along the six-yard box that just eluded Earnshaw.
It was Forest's new Polish midfielder Radoslaw Majewski who had the first shot of the game on 26 minutes, testing Russell Hoult with a rising effort from just outside the box.
Hoult then pulled off a good save to deny Earnshaw from close range a minute later and held a header from Adebola low down to his left, as Forest began to put the Magpies under pressure.
But he made a mistake just after the half-hour mark, with a poor clearance straight to McGugan, who failed to capitalise on the chance and blazed over the bar.
Earnshaw then miscued badly wide from the edge of the penalty area, with time and space for better, and then flashed an effort across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the far post.
It was the closest they came to taking the lead in the first half.
Notts introduced Rodgers for Sean Canham at the start of the second half and he made an immediate impact, hitting the post with a low shot from inside the box.
Kevin Pilkington came on for Hoult and Luke Chambers replaced Kelvin Wilson, who limped off at the end of the first half, for Forest.
Pilkington was called into early action, saving from Adebola from close range.
Rodgers fired County ahead on 56 minutes, capitalising on a slip by Chambers to drive the ball past Lee Camp from inside the penalty area. It was a clinical finish from the striker, his sixth goal of pre-season.
Hughes doubled their lead on the hour mark, placing a close-range header past Camp at the far post from Craig Westcarr's right-wing cross.
Hughes was then replaced by Delroy Facey.
Forest made four changes on 66 minutes, changing their strike-force completely, with Dexter Blackstock and David McGoldrick replacing Earnshaw and Adebola.
And they reduced their arrears on 74 minutes when McGugan hit a shot from fully 25 yards, maybe more, that caught Pilkington out. The Magpies' substitute stopper got a hand to it but only palmed it into his own net.
Blackstock than dragged an effort wide of the far post as the visitors sought an equaliser.
Notts played much better in the second half and took their chances brilliantly – Eriksson must have been pleased.

“I'm in full agreement with both Brownhatter and alwaysared. Has no-one ever heard of Football in the Community?? Because that's what we're in...a community; Nottingham. Being a lifelong Forest fan, I cannot hide my disappointment over losing to the 'Pies', howvever I do appreciate that County as a club seem to have turned a corner in recent years. Fair play to them for getting Sven in. Personal opinions aside, you cannot argue with what the guy has achieved throughout his career. This can only be a good thing for Notts and Nottingham as a whole surely? The relationship between Forest and Notts has always been of a friendly nature and that is how it should remain. County are one of the oldest football clubs and have a massive history as do Forest, regardless of 'success' and for that command respect. It was not too long ago remember when Forest were in similar financial difficulties after David Platt decided to waste ridiculous amounts of cash and bring one of our clubs to its knees... :-@
So honestly, stop whining about County moving forward as a club, as personally I'd love to see them at the City Ground for competitive matches in the next few years.
Rivalries such as ours are fantastic for the banter and ripping your mates to shreds after a few beers, as happened on Saturday, but lets save the real hatred and vindictive passion for that scum from up the M1, nit the guys who share our back yard?!?”

“Brownhatter ilkeston,
well said mate.i echo your comments completely.
as a forest fan i want to see notts do well but not at the expense of my club.BUT we are all from nottingham and we should want all nottm clubs, whatever the sport,to succeed.
i for one do not have any hatered towards notts but some of the comments on here particularly from dave notts and terry calverton border on abuse.they need to realise that alot of forest fans have put their hands in their pockets, and forest players too,i.e david johnson, to help notts through their financial troubles in the past.
i was at the match on saturday and notts fans were there chanting that they hate forest but forest fans were voicing their hate of derby.do you think that tells a story??
i think that alot of people on here etc have alot of growing up to do!!!!!!!
surely we should all want nottm clubs to do better than any team from derby or leicester!!!!!!”

“Was the reporter still in the bar when Rodgers hit the post? Well, at least we have the second half report now, the last time I read this, Forest were all over Notts and were thrashing them 0-0.”

“As a life long Notts fan I think there are too many handbags at dawn on this subject now. Some people are sensible and some just plain rude about each other. I've read loads of comments on this site and it so often ends up in a silly argument. As far as I know, true Forest fans do come and see County occasionally and thank you. I've probably paid to see both teams equally. I have no idea what NRUFC gained from selling the Ireland Avenue site but I certainly wish them no ill. If they could get back into the top pier again, it woud be great, much as if Forest or County did. We need class football and rugby in Nottingham and that means attendance at matches. We don't need to start slagging each other off, that should be saved for the Sheepies.”
