TEACHERS in Nottingham are to strike again over controversial term time changes.

The National Union of Teachers, which has nearly 500 members in the city, could call the strike within the next four weeks.

And the strikes could last for more than one day. A series of one-day strikes last year left thousands of children unable to go to school.

The city council is changing term times in September, saying it will benefit pupils. The union, however, believes it will have a detrimental impact and hopes to force a change.

Nearly three-quarters of NUT members said they would strike when balloted.

The decision over the timing of the action rests with the union's national branch, but Susi Artis, assistant secretary in Nottingham, expected it to be sooner rather than later.

She said: "We are still waiting to make a final decision, but there could be action in three to four weeks."

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers is weighing up whether to strike, while the largest union, the NASUWT, has no plans to.

The term change will see the six-week summer break cut to five and a two-week break introduced in October. There will also be a fixed break at the end of the spring term.

The unions fear this will cause problems because the county is sticking with the longer summer holiday.

Strikes last year closed 15 city schools and disrupted lessons at 40 others. Becky Humber, who has three children at Glenbrook Primary in Bilborough, called for an end to the dispute. "It's gone on long enough now."

“It would appear that this sutuation needs deflating as the council make threats and teaching unions respond with threats of strike action and nobody is getting anywhere, the only losers in all this are children and their education.”

http://tinyurl.com/lozvbs As can be seen on this website, teachers salaries are less than a quarter to less than a third of the amount quoted by Toryman who has quoted the salary for a head teacher on the highest level in London.”

“Some people seem to have forgotten what this thread is about judging by the last couple of posts. The council did not listen to the professionals they employ, and the strike is about the quality of education in this city. Teachers still get the same amount of holidays regardless. It's about common sense. The council say they want to help poorer families, and yet they want kids off school for longer in October when the weather is colder and they might not be able to play outside. And what about those families who have children in a Primary which has one holiday pattern, and older ones at Secondary with a different one. Come on guys, it's a no brainer...”

“I think this is all entirely unnecessary. The council should scrap the whole plan. It doesn't work.”

“There are I know some good teachers out there who deserve to be thought of as professionals. However, there also far too many ex-poly and Redbrick second class degree teachers who seem prepared to go on strike at the drop of a hat. £108,000 is not a bad salary given the long holidays and short working days.”

“@dooglepip1: "Next the teachers will be saying they are over worked and underpaid, lol....They wouldn't last 5 mins in the real world. You know working 12 hours a day, six or seven days a week. Some on the minimum wage."

So, in your view, all jobs should be measured against working "12 hours a day, six or seven days a week"? Oh dear. Talk of a race to the bottom. But why stop there - surely those folks working 80 hours/week on minimum wage in McJobs should consider themselves lucky to be in a job at all compared to, say, some poor homeless beggar on the streets starving? Surely kids these days should consider themselves lucky to be getting any education, compared to being sent up chimneys or down the mines?

Yes, as other trolls on here have ranted, if teachers don't like the work they can quit and look for other jobs, and despite that meaning writing off 000s in fees and years in training many do leave the profession through ill-health, fatigue or just plain disgust. Which is why it's so difficult to find teachers these days, why there are so many supply teachers in classrooms, and why teacher training courses are struggling for recruits. Keep up the bad work, O Trolls and Barking Bigots, and you will get what you so plainly want: the end of teaching as a profession.”
