A NOTTS education chief has warned that Sutton-in-Ashfield could miss out on its chance to open a new school if a planning application is delayed.

Talks have begun to secure village green status for Sutton Lawn, which is earmarked as the site of Sutton Community Academy.

Sutton Lawn would be protected from development if it is granted village green status.

And Coun Philip Owen, cabinet member for Children and Young People, this will scupper plans for the new academy.

The council hopes to win planning consent and apply for Government funding before the general election.

Objectors to the scheme have set up a Facebook group which now has more than 2,500 followers.

Prospective Ashfield MP Coun Jason Zadrozny has given the protesters a vote of support.

But Coun Owen alleged Coun Zadrozny was opposing the plans in a bid to win votes at the General Election.

Coun Zadrozny has refuted the claim and said he supported the wishes of residents.

Coun Owen, a Conservative member for Nuthall, said: "If we don't get the planning application, it won't go to the Secretary of State and there won't be a new school.

"One of the parliamentary candidates for Ashfield is seeking to whip up public opposition and is urging people to put in forms to make that area of Sutton Lawn a village green.

"This will deprive the people of Ashfield of a new academy building. I think that is deplorable."

Coun Zadrozny, said he had only suggested a village green application to supporters who were already intent on fighting the council's plans.

He said he agrees that the town needs a new school building but says Sutton Lawn is the wrong site.

He said: "It has won green flags three years running. They are about to build on at least a third of the park with this new school.

"I am opposing them building on Sutton Lawn but I am absolutely in favour of new school provision.

"I think the county council simply wants to build on that park because they own that bit of land.

"There are lots of brownfield sites in the town."

A report to the council's cabinet states: "The process of identifying a suitable site of sufficient size in the centre of Sutton-in-Ashfield has been challenging.

"A technical team was established to consider possible sites and whilst all sites identified have significant development issues, the conclusion was that the preferred site was on part of the Sutton Lawn."

“i would just like it to be known that we the lawnside community association had already the intention to apply for the village green status before councilor jason zadrozny had suggested it at the second save the lawn meeting which was held at the unwin club so i hope that the relevent councilors will leave him be, A councilor that is listening to the the community is good in my books after all, councilor zadrozny is a great support some might say he is doinghis job with passion pity others just see the pound signs. KEEP GREEN THE WAY SUTTON IS GOING THERE WILL BE NONE LEFT.”

“I object to the new Sutton Centre school being built on Sutton Lawn, they need a new school but not on there please, and i certainly don't agree with the merging thought of Sutton Centre and Quarrydale at all”

“"Labour Council's seem far to keen to destroy our greenfield/greenbelt sites."

Only 1 problem Michelle; this is a Tory County Council.

Nevertheless, as I say I am opposed to ocadomies, and I think it a disgrace for Coun Owen to hold a proverbial gun to Coun Zadrozny's head like that.”

“Lets just go back to basics....Sutton Lawn is totally the wrong place for the academy. It's time the council listened to the people - thats why we vote them in TO LISTEN and act for their constituents.
What would happen if a child fell in the dam, or was walking on the ice and something happened? Would they shout "health and safety", and drain the dam because it wasn't safe with children so close?
Leave our lawn alone - and for once in your life listen to the people who you represent.”

“First, let us dismiss Jason - he is not centred on anything but himself.
Sutton Centre is a successful school being encouraged to take an inappropriate academy route as the school has been told it is its only hance to continue in a new building. It is in a prime site and could be rebuilt there but because of economic pressures is being told to opt for a build elsewhere to secure a future.
The site IS important - but is masking the MOST important factor in all of this.
West Notts College have been asked to sponsor academy status for Sutton Centre. WHY? will they gain a 14+ Skills base from a new build when school intake falls because of current uncertainties? Why else would they be invovlved?

Wake up Ashfield. If you fail to support this successful Community school you will end up with the choice of two schools in Sutton instead of three. Which equals NO CHOICE at all because you will only be able to gain admission to the one you live closest to. This will affect all neighbouring villages and students in Kirkby as well.
I despair at the short-sightedness of who has priority on Sutton Lawn, dogs or children, when the whole future of choice for every child's education is affected here.
Is there anyone, anywhere, who cares enough to see what is happening ???”

“In 1993 an LEA inspection reported of Sutton Centre that "the campus reflects the philosophical and architectural vision of its founders to provide a true community school with a range of facilities and a caring and egalitarian ethos, to meet the needs of a community which had inadequate provision of social facilities".

It seems to me that to build on Sutton Lawn would go against this ethos. The lawn is widely used by the community for a variety of activities and in this part of the county where there is so much development of industrial areas it seems criminal to take away yet more green area.

I am a former pupil of Sutton Centre and very proud of my education and the opportunities it afforded me. I have returned to the area to raise my family and I hope an Academy will provide future generations with the same fantastic learning experiences I had. I am sure there are other suitable sites for this and I fear that the decision to build on Sutton Lawn is a financial one rather than a social one.”

“Sutton Lawns should be kept for the people's enjoyment. Labour Council's seem far to keen to destroy our greenfield/greenbelt sites.
An Academy on this site would be an absolute travesty not only to the beautiful parkland, the locality, wildlfie etc., but also to the sheltered employment at Rumbles award winning cafe. The people who work there are quite vulnerable and are likely to be intimidated by hoards of secondary aged school children.
I urge the LA to find a brownfield site or scrap the idea of amalgamating two secondaries into an Academy as historically they fail children anyway!”

“We (my Mum Dad n Sister) lived for 20+ years just off of the Lammas and 10 mins from Sutton Lawn, our house backed onto Willowbridge - We went raspberry picking, mushrooming and tadpoling on the fields there (Now a massive housing estate) - we went to the circus and funfair on the Lammas (now the new swimming centre) and this ''super acadamy'' is now being proposed on the Lawn - I am only 27 years old, and had my first child in January - Me and his father will not be able to take him to any of the local parks or beauty spots we grew up on - how sad?!!!!

Surely Ashfield council could demolish some of the eyesores in the area and build this academy on the land - what about the massive spaces nr the old pretty polly site? Still close enough to use the fields at the Lawn surely? It's ok to say the Lawn is a prime spot - and that Ashfield residents will still have acess to the rest of the Lawn - but we all know what happens at lunch/finishing times around these schools - groups of intimedating youngsters ( I know this isn't everyone), littering and loitering around the premises - I wonder which beauty spot they will pick to become the ''smoking spot'' and ''snogging corner'' ???? - Come on Ashfield speak up against something for once - is nothing sacred??”
