WORK to repair the suspension bridge over the River Trent has been put back until in the middle of May.

It means it will be closed during the Robin Hood Festival of Running – which usually crosses it as part of the course – for a second year.

The £1.5m repair job had originally been scheduled to start earlier and finish in September in time for the Festival of Running – although cycle group Pedals had pushed for the work to be finished in time for the cricket World Twenty20 at Trent Bridge in June. But the bridge's owners Severn Trent Water said the complexities of repairs, and the number of consents required from different organisations have delayed the start date.

"We're now aiming for completion of the much-needed repairs to the bridge, which is more than 100 years old, by the end of October this year," said Severn Trent Water's senior operations manager Fraser Pithie.

“It was obvious from the moment that the bridge was shut that Severn Trent were hoping to delay repairs to the bridge for as long as possible. Months to conduct surveys, months before they posted any information on their website, months before they posted signage on the bridge and they've already moved their completion date that was lacking in ambition in the first place. 2 weeks ago, the link on their website regarding the bridge was also faulty so you couldn't even email Severn Trent to ask them what was happening. I suspect that they're moving on this project on a 'need to' basis so will stall until they receive pressure from the public and media and will then move the project forward slightly before stalling again.
This bridge is a thorn in their side and they'd rather they weren't responsible for it at all.
How embarressing that Nottingham's showcase event - Cricket World Cup, Marathon and Riverside Festival - will all highlight this sorry state of affairs. Think you need to e-think your PR strategy Severn Trent!”
