A FOUR-MONTH-OLD baby who died of a suspected salt overdose has been named by Notts Coroner Dr Nigel Chapman.

An inquest into the death of Samuel McIntosh is expected to be opened by Dr Chapman tomorrow.

A probe was launched into the death at one of the QMC's neo-natal wards on July 7.

Samuel was reported to have become acutely dehydrated after being put on a saline solution drip, dying three days later. A post-mortem examination has been carried out and tests performed to see if the tot was given an overdose of saline solution.

Detectives will not be carrying out their own probe but the coroner will hold a full investigation.

Dr Stephen Fowlie, of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, said earlier: "We offer our deepest condolences to the family.

"We are supporting the family in this difficult time and keeping them fully informed of our investigations into the loss of their baby.

"We apologise for any short-comings in our care of their child."
