SUPERMARKET Morrisons has apologised after a Muslim family bought a tuna salad which contained ham.

The family from Carlton bought two pasta salads which were labelled as tuna salads from Morrisons in Netherfield last month.

But when they got home they discovered it was a ham salad.

It is against the family's religion to eat meat from a pig. The mum-of-two in the family, who did not want to be identified, complained to Morrisons about the mis-labelled food.

She said: "My children and I have never eaten ham before so we didn't know what it looked like. But we realised straight away that it was not tuna in the salad and my children were very distraught."

She also said she was unhappy with the response she received from Morrisons.

She said: "I received a £15 gift voucher as an apology but this is not enough. Morrisons need to realise the damage they have done. If food is mis-labelled, people could have allergic reactions when picking produce they think is safe to eat."

A spokesperson for Morissons said: "We are aware our customers may wish to avoid certain foods for religious reasons and we take correct labelling very seriously. We were very sorry to learn that this customer was sold an incorrectly labelled product and have offered our sincerest apologies.

"We will ensure extra vigilance with regard to the correct labelling of these products.''

“did this woman walk round the supermarket with her eyes closed did she not look at the packaging tuna is clearly different from ham does she just pick things up without looking at it. 15 pounds compensation is more than enough even though i feel it was down to this womans stupidity and that she wanted more money through the publicity. too greedy. i found this article amuusing to say the least. stupidity and ignorance springs to mind and this woman was hoping by going to the papers she would get more compo " dont think so"

oh well she can buy a few tins of tuna with the £15 undeserved compo she got and make her own in future.”

“I've been a vegetarian since I was a small child. When I discovered I was eating animals I was quite repulsed and stopped eating any kind of flesh. On my 65th birthday my husband and I went to a nice restaurant and I ordered a vegetarian dish. I asked the waitress to make sure the pan the food would be fried in was cleaned well, as I didn't want any remnanats of oil or flesh from the previous food that had been cooked in the pan. As I tucked into the delicious nuts and spicy oriental vegetables, I found myself eating something with a very unfamiliar texture, so I asked my husband to try it. He said it was chicken. I immediately felt quite nauseated and very distressed, as eating flesh is, for me, quite a horrifying idea. My husband called over the waitress, who apologised and offered to bring me a meat free dish, whilst pointing out that the rice which is part of the dish is cooked in chicken broth (no mention of this in the menu). By this time I had lost my appetite. We were not charged for our meal or drinks, and received an apology. No vouchers for a free meal, no visits to the media. End of the matter. As should be the case in this story.”
