The Nottinghamshire branch of the Burma Star Association folded in 2006 due to the old age and ill health of the remaining members, who numbered 30 at the time.

Since then at least seven have died that former treasurer Jack Schofield, 86, is aware of.

Mr Schofield, from Gedling, was a Leading Aircraftman with the RAF in Burma from 1942-46. He said: "It is quite right to say that Mr Taylor was one of the last local Burma veterans. It is so important that we remember our role, to make people aware of what happened and teach the younger generation to avoid further world wars."
