STAFF at a city centre bakery claim the heat in the premises is making working conditions there "unbearable".

Temperatures at Greggs in the Broadmarsh Centre regularly reach up to 45C in the area where the ovens are, it is claimed.

The heat is making many members of staff feel dizzy or unwell, one of them said.

"It has been going on for a couple of years now," said the employee, who didn't want to be named.

"We end up having dizzy spells. It can't be right we have to work in those conditions."

The woman claims bosses for the firm have been unwilling to help when they complained about the conditions.

"Some staff have been forced to leave because they couldn't take it any more," she said.

"We have had the back door open in the past but we had to stop doing that because of health and safety.

"But our health and safety is not being looked after."

The staff also claim the heat from the oven area is affecting the retail area, where there are fridges.

"These fridges aren't keeping the food and drink cold like they should because of the heat from the oven area," the member of staff said.

Working laws in the UK don't stipulate maximum working temperatures.

However, Nottingham City Council vowed to investigate the store following the complaints about working conditions and was satisfied with its findings.

A city council spokesman said: "'An Environmental Health Officer has visited the premises and found although the air conditioning was defective, this is due to be repaired and the highest temperature was 30 degrees.

"Although it would be preferable to have temperatures lower than this, the company is managing the food and health and safety risks to reduce the likelihood of harm until the air conditioning is repaired.

"Staff can take breaks when they need to and have access to water.

"We'll continue to monitor to ensure the repairs take place."

A spokesman for Greggs said: "We can confirm that there has been a fault with the air conditioning in our Broadmarsh Centre shop, which has led to increased temperatures, particularly in the back of the premises.

"We are working hard to fix the problem as quickly as possible and while we are trading as normal we are also providing extra breaks and refreshments to our staff, as their comfort and welfare is paramount."

“Would have thought that the heat from the ovens would be far more bearable than the smell of the great shell-suited unwashed on the other side of the counter, queueing up for the meat-free but still full of fat sausage rolls and slices of pizza they feed their pram-bound offspring with, after they get their dole cheques cashed.

Pity they don't think about selling deodorant there, too.”
