Speed limit change on the way on road where Harrison Carlin, 15, died
THE speed limit is set to be lowered on a road where a teenager from Hucknall lost his life.
Harrison Carlin was 15 when he was hit by a car as he cycled along Forest Lane, Papplewick, in July on the way to play football with his friends.

The road currently has a speed limit of either 30mph or 60mph.
The proposal is for the 30mph section to be extended, and the 60mph section to be reduced to 50mph.

The move has been welcomed by Harrison's former friends at the National Academy, in Hucknall, where he was a pupil.
Jack Chaplin and Corey Paylin founded a "Put Things Right" campaign to raise money for a speed-measuring sign on the road and have also campaigned to have speed limits changed and raise awareness of road safety.
Jack, a year 10 pupil, said: "This road is very dangerous, which is why we want the speed limit changed. We need to prevent lives being lost."
Pupils from the school held a series of special assemblies last week to mark Road Safety Awareness Week and held a high-visibility clothing day on Friday to raise awareness of road safety.
Corey, also in year 10, said children and teachers had made a big effort to wear high-visibility clothing.
He added: "The support has been brilliant."
The pair are also planning to take their road safety message to primary schools in the area.
Corey said: "We need younger people to realise the danger of main roads."
John Edwards, principal of the school, said speed limits on the road needed changing. "The speed limit goes from 30 to 60mph at the moment and there's nothing in between," he said.
He added: "I'm not going to say 'don't cycle' – but there are risks and the more children can be aware, the better."
The proposals include an extension of street lighting on the road, which automatically extends the length of the 30mph zone
Notts County Council is consultating over the plans but hopes to introduce the changes by April next year.
Suzanne Heydon, group manager for highway safety at the council, said: "The Government asked all Highways Authorities to look at speed limits on all the county's A and B classified roads and at the same time to look at speed limits in Nottinghamshire villages.
"As a result of these one-off studies, it was decided to prioritise the introduction of new speed limits in Forest Lane."
Ben Marshall, of Blacksmith's Court, Papplewick, is chairman of the Put Things Right campaign and taught at Harrison Carlin's primary school, Hillside.
The 28-year-old said: "It's great to see everyone uniting and saying we need to do something about it.
"The proposals are a great first step to making the roads safer.
"We'd like to add our thanks to those who made this happen.
"I think it's absolutely fantastic but there may be cause in future to reduce it further."
Harrison's school suffered a second tragedy in September this year when 12-year-old Jeffrey Townley died after a collision with a van in Linby Road, Hucknall.

“It is great that the school has engaged and encouraged the children following such tragic circumstances to take such positive steps. The wearing of high visibility clothing is really important and something many teenagers don't think about or are not allowed to wear because of school uniform policies. I wish them well in their efforts to educate more children on road safety.”

“While not wanting to comment on this specific incident as the facts are as yet unknown, I would agree that many youngsters need more road sense to stop many of these accidents. This may involve reintroducing the Cycling Proficiency Test as I also had to do one and pass it before we were allowed to ride to school, and stop this silly practise many have of wearing the various music players while crossing roads, jogging, or riding cycles.
Much more could be done by parents in ensuring their children have more road sense instead of just walking into traffic themselves and dragging children along and setting bad examples.
Road safety is not just down to the drivers, its up to everyone who uses the roads.”

In my earlier post I did not say that this lad was riding to school, I merely stated that I have seen the way school children ride to and from school.
I also asked a question as to the cause of the accident, was it the driver speeding or cyclist at fault.
Many years a go I witnessed my brother getting hit by a car and it was not a nice sight,we did not call for the speed limit to be lowered because we first looked at the cause and it was my brothers for not looking properly and the driver was not speeding.
I see children riding while talking on the phone , listening to MP 3 players and failing to adhere to any part of the Highway Code.”

just a word of caution and I writing this with the best of intentions and not having a go at you the cause of the accident has not been concluded yet so the spreading of rumours is not doing any good for anyone.Recently rumours have been circulated by organisations and individuals about a Lord which prooved unfounded, these organisations have paid several hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation and he is now pursuing other individuals so please be careful what you write. “I totally agree with Jack's campaign but Jack, am I right in thinking Harrison crossed the road with headsets in his ears and couldn't hear the car coming? Please don't have a go but a relative of mine heard his grandmother talking about it in a gym. So i believe this case wasn't speed related and no charges were brought to the driver but totally agree with most people on this page”

“Not that i disagree with the limit change, but, Ben Marshall you cannot compare this accident with the young gentleman who died after the stolen car he was traveling in left the road. His friend was driving at incredibly high speeds to get away from the police - not just going about his business at 60mph.”
