Chief executive John Lowther said: “Robin Hood is such a strong pull for tourists and we want to develop an attraction that will be fitting to the legend.

“Our vision is to build a flagship attraction for the county which will give a huge boost to the local economy.”

The plans come after years of uncertainty about the Sherwood Forest centre, with a number of plans shelved in the past due to lack of available funding.

John Cottee, chairman of the culture committee at Notts County Council, said the private investment was necessary to make the attraction a “jewel in the crown” of Notts.

He added: “We want to raise the profile of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest and we have found a vision for the centre that we agree will be fantastic. We are hoping this new centre will attract visitors from all over the country and the world.”

According to the developers, the plans will create around 100 jobs and benefit the local economy by more than £2 million a year.

    “Stupid computer.

It's better than what's there now and a large number of people visit Sherwood Forest so why not do more to bring in more people.

Nobody is going to build a new Alton Towers there but you'll be amazed at what people do go and visit and if the only Robin Hood attraction in Robin Hood county is "a few interactive displays while the kids charge around the adventure playground" then they'll go because it's a Robin Hood attraction. If it's improved every year then they'll come back.”

“Alberto Frog. Do you honestly believe people will travel miles to see a few interactive displays while the kids charge around the adventure playground.

This is a cheap development that ranks around 9 out of 10 on my patented Tales of Robin Hood ****ometer.”

“omega03, you did notice the words "Private investment" in the article didn't you? That means that the council aren't paying, a private company are.

The council have had years to do something with the area and have done very little, a new attraction will bring more visitors and more money.

As for the Thorpe Park compairson, Thorpe (like Alton Towers, Drayton Manor and other parks of that type) started small with just a few attractions and grew year over year to become the parks they are today (drawing visitors back year over year). If the new venture is a success, here's hoping that more will be invested in years to come and the local economy will be boosted even more.”

“To put things in context. Thorpe Park spent £20 million on just one new ride last year.”

“£13 million does not buy much in the way of a "visitor experience". And 100 jobs generating £2m a year works out at just £20k per post - chicken feed.”

“..and before everyone jumps on the bandwagon... for social services funded clients a home from
Notts council gets just over £400 a week per resident or £57 a day.... if anyone can find a hotel where the occupant gets a cooked breakfast - 3 course lunch, tea, laundry done, care delivered and all other bills paid ie gas, elec, water well done !!!... therefore more money should be put into care rather than this and a tram system which will never recoup its money.... perhaps Radio Nottm who do the "work experience weds" ought to send their reporter to come and do a 12 hour shift with me for min. wage instead of watching a machine milk cows and a cooker bake cakes !!!”

“...why not put £13m into the care of the elderly... what is the pay back period for £13m?

The guy on Radio Nottm this morning when asked about guide prices could not confirm apart from £17 for overseas visitiors....”

“I'm just grateful somebody has done something, it's long been a joke the amount of effort Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils have put into maximising their biggest source of tourism income so for a private firm to come in and show them how it should be done has been long overdue.

Perhaps the City Council will now loosen the reigns on the Nottingham Castle a bit and the city can start making some money from it's legend.”
