VETERAN councillor Brian Grocock has been put in charge of the City Centre Working Group.

The committee is charged with overseeing the development of the city centre district and the position has given the Bestwood councillor the opportunity to get a few things off his chest.

He was in good form when members met this week. Council officers produced a detailed breakdown of street cleaning performance statistics but it turned out Coun Grocock had been doing a bit of monitoring for himself.

"There has been a coke bottle in [a grid] outside the Corner House now for six weeks," said Coun Grocock. "I monitor it on a daily basis to see if anyone has seen fit to move it."

He is also less than impressed with the quality of sweeping along King Street, which has alcoves and inlets along its length now stuffed with rubbish.

"We belt straight up the middle and never put a brush in them," observed the eagle-eyed councillor. He has a point.
