Sharphill development gets go- ahead
DEVELOPERS could start building 1,200 homes on green-belt land in Edwalton in two years after it was given the go ahead today by the secretary of state.
A public inquiry was held after the developers appealed against Rushcliffe Borough Council's decision to refuse planning permission for Sharphill Woods last July.

Coun Neil Clarke, leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, says he is disappointed and will be looking at the 'decision closely' to protect residents interests.
In the decision notice issued today, it says the secretary of state does not think the development is premature in relation to Rushcliffe's emerging planning guidelines for developments up to 2026.
It also states that the urgent need for land for housing outweighs the inappropriate development of the green belt.
The development also includes a primary school, business innovation centre, further education establishment, offices, a local centre with retail units, a community building and health centre and more.
Coun Neil Clarke, leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council said: "We are very disappointed that neither the Inspector or the Secretary of State have given due weight to the concerns that we have raised or taken account of the fact that we are part way through a local planning process with other Notts authorities to identify the best places for any new development both locally and within the region.
"We will be looking very closely at the decision to ensure we do all we possibly can to protect residents' interests.
"The developers will still have to submit detailed plans. We understand that development might start on site in two years time, but development will be phased over a number of years."
The planning permission has been granted subject to conditions.
Coun Chris Evans, Leader of the Opposition said: "This Government is forcing housing down Rushcliffe's throat. The residents of Rushcliffe, along with Rushcliffe Borough Council, made it quite clear this was not the right site.
"We're developing a plan as fast as we can to accommodate this ridiculous amount of housing and we're hopeful the Secretary of State would appreciate that and allow us to come forward with a complete plan, rather than allow the developers to have their way."

“I am encouraged by the well informed and heartfelt critique of this disaster of ¿development¿ but disheartened by the ongoing divisions between ¿nimbys¿ and those with a broader and deeper understanding of the problems of capitalism and the state. What we need first of all is empathy with the nimbys. Yes, this is a difficult and distasteful task for those who know the crass ignorance demonstrated by most people who live in the Rushcliffe and specifically Edwalton area to the plight of the less fortunate. Class war this is most definitely not!
Nevertheless, right now, these are the folks in the firing line and the time has rarely been better for us to enlist and enlighten them as to the injustices and inequitiesof our present systemic conjuncture and rally their substantial resources in the struggle for social, ecological, cultural and political emancipation.
I sadly don¿t live in south notts at the moment but keep my ear to the ground on this as many a long sunny day and warm night was spent by myself and friends in these very special fields and woods. To build up to the edge of these woods is to strangle them with the unsustainable monochrome monotony of private profit and greed.
All that is required for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing¿ Let get organised folks, it¿s been postponed before and can be done again. We can make it bloody expensive for them at little relative cost to ourselves.”

“Anything that winds up the NIMBYs is OK in my book.
They sit in their homes which were built on countyside and complain when others do the same.
BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Labour I will vote for you again”

“Affordable?... you're having a laugh right? Lets see how many affordable houses are built on this site.... more like "mock tudor" 4 - 5 bed detached for all the homeless executives who don't want to slum it in the city with their 2.4 children and the family labrador.”
