"Network Rail engineers are on site and are working to fix the problem. However, due to the scale of the disruption, we expect our services in and out of London to be delayed for the remainder of the day.

"We would like to apologise to passengers for the disruption this will undoubtedly cause to their journeys. We will return services to normal as quickly as possible once the fault has been fixed."

In addition, East Midlands Trains services may be amended or cancelled at short notice.

Passengers are advised to use an alternative route where possible and to allow extra time for their journeys.

East Midlands Trains has pledged tickets that have not been used today will be valid for use tomorrow.
