ScreenLit: Chanel biopic to open prestigious festival
THE ScreenLit Festival of Film, TV and Writing is not aiming to do things by half measures.
The festival, which opens on Monday and runs until Sunday, July 5, aims to be Nottingham's first major film festival since Shots In the Dark ended more than a decade ago, as well as the first major festival devoted to writing for film and television.

REPUTED: Audrey Tautou in Coco Before Chanel
A tall order like that requires a big party to kick things off. Some glitz. Some glamour. A bit of a do. And what better name to invoke for that than Chanel? On Monday, at 7.30pm, as part of the gala opening, the Broadway hosts the UK premiere of Coco Before Chanel, a new, acclaimed biopic starring Audrey Tautou as the woman who grew up in an orphanage and went on to revolutionise fashion.
The film, also screened on Wednesday before returning for its regular Broadway run at the end of the month, is an appropriate choice to open a festival that looks at writing, and the intersection of literature and film. It was written and directed by Anne Fontaine from a Chanel biography by former French Vogue editor Edmonde Charles-Roux – a crossroads of screenwriting, literature and reportage.
The festival has a diverse programme for film buffs and more casual cinema-goers alike.
Its Local Legends programme will look at DH Lawrence in film, as well as Robin Hood in literature, film and television. On Thursday and Saturday, July 4, the Broadway offers a rare screening of the 1960 version of Sons and Lovers.
