CLAREMONT Primary School has won an award for its efforts to promote healthy ways to travel to school.

The school in Carrington, which runs two Walking Buses every morning, was presented with the Big Wheel's Big Foot award. The prize is a one metre long wooden sculpture of a foot.

The Walking Bus initiative sees lots of children walk to school with an adult, as if they were travelling by bus.

The school says the scheme has improved attendance rates.

The school has also been involved in the Footprints campaign, which encourages children to walk to school at least once a week.

Emma Davis, a learning mentor at Claremont, said: "We are pleased to be part of something that is fun and healthy for the kids and helpful to their parents."
