Tribunal rules on sacked librarian case
A LIBRARIAN who was sacked after ill health should have been treated as disabled, a tribunal has ruled.
Jacqueline Crockford was dismissed from West Bridgford School following a period of ill health.

A Nottingham employment tribunal found yesterday that Ms Crockford's nervous anxiety should have been classed as a disability.
Tribunal chairman Peter Britton ruled that her condition had a 'substantial' impact on her everyday life and 'reasonable adjustment' should have been made to accommodate the West Bridgford woman.
Mr Britton found that the school's management were "somewhat unaware" of the Disability Discrimination Act.
She was dismissed after a final written warning on July 19 last year.
"The issue of whether (Ms Crockford) was disabled did not come into their mind," he said.
"It's clear that the claimant was not informing the school about the extent of her condition, but the school knew of her anxiety from the occupational health report."
The 55-year-old suffered a severe throat infection, a virus and a breakdown during 2006 and 2007 after her workload was increased.
Dr Neil Holden, a psychiatrist based at Queens Medical Centre, diagnosed Ms Crockford's condition.
She has coped with her anxiety with a combination of prescribed medication and self-management techniques including exercise.
In evidence, head teacher Rob McDonough said it "did not come up on the radar" in terms of her health problems being a disability. Yesterday's proceedings were a disability pre-review hearing as the school disputed Ms Crockford was disabled. A tribunal into allegations of harassment and unfair dismissal against Ms Crockford by the school will now take place.

“When I see a woman with disabilities who has the guts and determination to deal with them to such a degree which has enabled her against the odds to be an inspirational librarian for most of her working life, then my only response can be that of respect. Sadly the employer¿s own comments: "it did not come up on the radar" indicates that they have failed to support this librarian so that she could have done her job to the high standard she sets herself and is used to. What a loss to the students of that school!”

“As a student at the school for seven years, for five of which Ms Crockford ran the school library I have nothing but praise for her. She was an extremely dedicated and professional woman who ran the library with warmth and enthusiasm for literature which inspired many around her. Her discipline and approach was excellent and students respected and liked her in equal measure whilst finding her approachable.
It was only after the new Head teacher arrived that her condition deteriorated - prior to this she displayed no problems to students. The library since her dismissal is in an appalling state - all the decent books have been stolen due to lack of overseeing, no classes are held in the library resulting in a reduction in students reading and the resources which are present still are under used or outdated.
The library was run by Ms Crockford and an assistant for years and required more than one full time worker. The role was stressful as she dealt with 1200 students often during break or lunch hours where students are at their most unruly.
A lovely woman and well liked, please stop this slandering without having any personal knowledge or even an understanding of her condition.”

“Forget swine flu, we should be very concerned about a huge outbreak of ignorance in Nottngham as demonstrated so ably by the comments relating to this article. Most people are commenting on a few lines in the press that have tried to distill down months, if not years of investigation and examination by the legal profession. Without the same access to all the detail these professionals had how do any of you think you can make a fair assessment of either side? It is not only easy to point a finger of suspicion at the individual but also lazy; journalism for the masses sucks.
Do you not think Ms Crockford will have been under the most intense scrutiny since bringing this claim? Why can you not see the responsibility of the school to offer a duty of care? Those colleagues who have worked with Ms Crockford support her because of her professionalism and desire to work in spite of her condition. Any decent employer should want to help their employees overcome such difficulties and nurture them back to work for the benefit of all. This librarian was well liked and well respected within the school prior to her dismissal.
The fatuous comments and sweeping generalities displayed below, not to mention the xenophobia, are evidence we remain with one foot planted firmly in dystopia.”

“How stressful can her job have been? Well, stress is caused by isolation and lack of appreciation. School librarians all suffer from this. In a world of teachers, no-one understand our training and professionalism. We work unsocial hours - through lunch-times and breaks, often solo, dealing with crowds of teenagers. It can be a very rewarding job, or it can be hell - a lot depends on how much the school backs you and encourages you. I was more fortunate than Ms Crockford. But I would like to see a little more understanding shown in these comments, about the fact that any job can be stressful in certain circumstances, as this was. Jobs in secondary schools are all stressful before you start, and appropriate support and line manager is absolutely vital”

“The Librarian in question worked full time for 27 years before she was sacked, Contrary to what is put about in the media, she will not walk off with a lot of money. She has a mental illness that she has coped with all her life(and kept down a job and did it very well) until this Head came along and decided it was cheaper to give her a nervous breakdown than it was to make her redundant cos he didnt want her any more. People should think before they make sweeping statements. She has lost her job and her health now. Two things she wanted to keep and she wanted to carry on working till she retired...paying her taxes. Nobody pretends to have mental illnesand the medical experts arent fooled that easily.”
