Amateur boxing: Local boys had mixed success in the National Schoolboys East Midlands Region preliminaries at the Engineers Club, in Derby.

Charlie Pearson (South Normanton) walked over in the Class 1 38kg. George Charalambous (St George's Hucknall), having only his fourth bout, went down on points in his Class 1 36kg bout against Miles Wright (Far Cotton).

His brother, Christage, had a good win over Loui Hemstock (Trinity). Christage had Hemstock in trouble in the first and third rounds.

Shepshed's Adam Brailsford is the Class 2 34kg East Midlands champion after beating Callum Fisher (Hucknall Boys) on points.

Liam Burton (Long Eaton) was the only entry in the 38k class, while – at 40kg – Jake Hill (Retford) had a unanimous points win over Macaulay Willbye (Phoenix).

At 42kg, Billy Scott (Retford) beat Nicol Laivars (Mansfield) on points. Kyan Hayer (Aldercar & Langley Mill) was stopped in the semi-finals by Pat Smith (King's Heath), while Daniel Elliott (South Normanton) walked over at 57kg.

He could box again on the Benny's show at Clifton MW on Saturday.

It promises to be a busy season locally. Bilborough have a show at Strelley Social Club on February 16, while Mansfield ABC are at Portland College on February 24.
