A NOTTS landlord is hoping to save an historic pub from the threat of closure.

Ye Olde Salutation Inn's future was uncertain as its parent company Chimpeasy Limited went into voluntary liquidation in December.

But following the formation of a new parent company, the Rock and Ale Company, the future of the pub now looks to have been secured.

Pete Beletzan, landlord the Hounds Gate pub, has formed a new company to help guarantee its future.

Mr Beletzan, who left as a director of Chimpeasy Limited in 2009, is confident the Salutation can overcome past problems.

He said: "The company (Chimpeasy Limited) didn't do very well.

"By the summer, problems started to occur.

"It was clear by September we were about to go under. The brewery have been very good but we decided to just start again.

"I could have just walked away but decided not to. I didn't want to leave.

"It has been a tough climate for pubs.

"Rents were going up and people were staying at home.

"But it is starting to look up.

"I am confident about the future.

"It's a great pub, we get some really great customers and everyone has rallied round to support us."

Steve Westby, Nottingham chairman of real-ale lovers group Camra, is delighted the pub is staying open.

He said: "It's superb that the Salutation Inn is staying open.

"We look forward to sampling their excellent ales in the future.

"The pub has a lovely atmosphere, caters for different types of people and does great food too."

But he fate of the Royal Children pub, in Castle Gate, is still unclear as the building has been put up for let.

Mr Beletzan confirmed the plan to sell the pub, saying: "We are getting rid of next door."

Mr Westby hopes the Royal Children can be opened under new ownership and said: "I'm disappointed the previous owners were not able to work it out.

"I hope new owners can come in and turn it back to a successful pub."

“Tug, as I have said before, what is damaging our pubs is cheap drink in the supermarkets.

That, I am pleased to say, is something the Coalition seems to be looking at with its pricing strategy.”

“No wonder the Pubs and Clubs all over the UK are calling for a Reform of the smoking ban, closures are set to rocket this year. But it does show that the coalition do not care about our Pubs or what they want to help save the industry and thousands more jobs. They promised Reforms, where are they ?.”
