A ROW has broken out over the removal of four stained-glass windows at County Hall.

The windows, which depict Notts heritage, were taken out of the entrance hall on the direction of the Conservative leader of the county council, Coun Kay Cutts.

It is claimed Coun Cutts did not like the six foot panes, which illustrated mining, agriculture, Robin Hood, and culture.

Although she says they will be used elsewhere at County Hall,

They were removed as part of a redecoration and refurbishment scheme ordered by Coun Cutts since she took over at County Hall following the Conservatives' election win in June.

The glass, which was made for the council by the Eastwood Senior Citizens' Arts Project 15 years ago, is now in storage.

Coun Cutts has already initiated an £11,000 refurbishment of the ruling group's corridor, with new wooden floor in her office, and repainting and replacement of fire doors.

Further changes are planned in order to accommodate the increased number of Conservative councillors.

The latest project, which will include painting of the entrance hall and carpet cleaning, will cost £1,500.

The move has caused the Labour opposition at County Hall to round on Coun Kay Cutts and her group. Labour leader Coun Alan Rhodes accuses Coun Cutts and the Tory administration of rearranging the furniture at County Hall while failing to make decisions on the big issues.

He has highlighted:

No formal decision on the Conservative's pledge to withdraw from the extension of Nottingham's tram system

Uncertainty over the future of the "bus plugs" road scheme in Gedling, which the Conservatives pledged to review

Threat of redundancy for council staff after Conservatives pledged to make substantial savings.

Coun Rhodes described the removal of the windows as "corporate vandalism".

He said: "There is refurbishment and yet we don't know what the future is for adult social care, what is happening to libraries, the bus plug farce continues, the tram rumbles on, staff jobs are under threat.

"How have they got time to do silly things like this? It is a very unsatisfactory situation."

A spokeswoman for Notts County Council confirmed details of the latest refurbishment. "The windows are being kept for display elsewhere when we find a suitable location," she said.

And Coun Cutts said the council's business was progressing, regardless of any refurbishment work.

"Labour is not the ruling group," she said. "They are not aware of the debates and discussions that are taking place."

Coun Cutts said plans on the bus plugs were progressing and a consultation on alternative schemes would take place and she hoped the city's tram would be discussed at the September council meeting subject to discussions with the city council.

She said the stained glass windows would be used elsewhere in County Hall.

She said: "We think they are better made into a screen. They have not been particularly well looked at over the years. We are hoping to make more of them."

“What authority does Kay Cutts have over window policies?

So much for saving public money and focusing on essential services - lavish £11,000 refurbishments are clearly NOT in the interests of the public in the current financial sitation.

    What a mess.”

“I think I am perhaps usefully placed to comment on the current situation at County Hall. Yes, I am an employee of the County Council, but I have never felt so angered, annoyed, frustrated by the latest farce.
It is true, the new Conservative Administration quite frankly have got no idea what they are doing. It is led by a woman who very much thinks that she is Margaret Thatcher; she is the one making the decision and the vegetables (anyone remember the Spitting Image sketch) in her Cabinet are a group of self-important individuals, yes, ex-company ¿men¿ who are great button counters, used car salesmen etc but have no idea about providing public ser vices. Oh, and then there¿s Cllr Laughton ¿ whose sole aim in life is to interfere and feather his own prospective parliamentary nest.
Also, some of the comments posted are correct, they cannot and will not make any decision that is why there is so much anger and frustration in the Council. The issues that matter are going to be debated in September ¿ but if getting control of the Council was so important to the Tories, why didn¿t the debate them over summer? Multi-million pound decision are being avoided, whist silly personal issues are being focused on. OK, the purpose of the Politicians (of whatever party) is to set policy, and the Officers are to implement policy and manage the Council ¿ so what is the Chief Executive doing? He seems to have just decided to be a sheep (or perhaps a vegetable) and pander to Cllr Thatcher¿s (oh, sorry Cutt¿s personal ambitions).
It was said by Cllr Cutts that Officers had been brainwashed by years of Labour rule??? Well, now seems to be the time to brainwash Officers as Tory puppets, just a real shame that the senior officers, Corporate Directors and Chief Exec seem to have volunteered themselves to be at the head of the queue.
Come on Mick Burrows, get a backbone and show some of that spirit that we have seen in the past and stop this farce.
Oh, and Callum Double-Barrel, you need to go back to Whitehall, stop telling senior officers and the media that black is white and everything is under control just because you (and not Cllr Cutts) thinks so ¿ we all know (and you do) that it is not; your sticklebricks and colouring set will still be where you left them.
Just in case anyone thinks that I am a leftie ¿ I am not. Labour had their issues and problems too, but at least they had the sense to know what was and what was not important to the Council and the Public who voted them in.”

“Well, there appears to have been a lot of ranting not relating to the subject of the story. The facts are pretty basic - the new wooden floor was installed to replace a carpet which was only put down last year, the coloured glass panels could not have been seen by any more people than they already have as they were installed at the main entrances to County Hall, three new flag poles on a balcony to fly what flags, and the bit that was missing was the "installation" of a 22 year old Tory "spin doctor" who appears to be the link between the local conservative part and conservative central ofice in London. Whilst the politicians have looked after their accomodation staff are having to work in cramped conditions in rooms that need redecorating. The senior managers also replaced perfectly good wooden doors (excellent fire barriers) wth ones with glass in them so that "they could be seen" by staff. I'm sorry, but the politicians of whatever party are all as bad although there are one or two good ones still at County Hall. The best thing that the folk of Nottinghamshire could have had is/was an elected mayor who would do the best for the people of Nottinghamshire without any political allegiance or whip. When the labour group allegedly asked the folk of Nottinghamshire if that's what they would like I seem to remember that the number voting in favour was very low - not surprising when only a very small sample of residents were asked. Perhaps Mrs. Cutts intends to be the new "iron lady"?”

“Thank god the tories have taken control at County Hall. In Kay Cutts they have a strong, no nonsense, leader who, given time, will deliver the goods. Lets have no more looney lefties commenting on this story. All I can say in conclusion is 'Why not a new wooden floor' after all we have had a load of wooden heads/blockheads walking around County Hall for the past 28 years.”
