ROBBING from the rich and giving to the poor apparently doesn't pull in the TV ratings like it used to.

The BBC announced yesterday the cancellation of Robin Hood, the programme it introduced three years ago to bolster its BBC1 Saturday-night family line-up revitalised by Doctor Who.

Set in Sherwood Forest but filmed in Hungary, the programme starred Jonas Armstrong as a young version of the legendary hero. But Armstrong has announced he would not be back for a fourth series, casting its future in doubt.

It was still capable of pulling in millions of viewers on a good Saturday – and had built up an international following, including a slot on BBC America – but was no longer the massive ratings-getter expected by the BBC.

Saturday's season three finale had only 1.7m viewers – although it was bumped to BBC2 to make way for Andy Murray at Wimbledon.

The cancellation comes at a time when city tourism bosses are focusing more on the big screen as a way to capitalise on Robin-loving tourists' interest in Nottingham. In particular, they're looking at the in-the-works big-budget re-telling of the legend starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett.

As reported yesterday in the Post, tourism body Experience Nottinghamshire is in talks with Universal Pictures to bring the film's premiere to Nottingham, and to use images from the film to publicise tourist attractions.

The television programme had helped garner new interest in the legend, said Experience Nottinghamshire's Alex Green. But he insists the programme's demise would not end that.

"We've certainly enjoyed the benefits of the programme's popularity in terms of increased visitors to Nottinghamshire," she said, "but I think this will continue, despite the series coming to an end''.

Stephen Barker, director of communications at Nottingham City Council, said: "The legend lives on. The series could not have gone on forever.''

“Best news I have heard for simply ages. If your going to a show like Robin Hood look at the shows in the past NOT films. IE robin of Sherwood. which was a wonderful series.

But no, they give you a black friar tuck WHY!
It was just political correctness gone MAD!”

“I wholeheartedly support brittvfan's comments. How about laying the blame for this show's downfall where it really belongs - with the Executive producers, inept script-writers and Production Team. Don't even think of holding the stars, particularly Jonas Armstrong's leaving the show at the end of his committed 3-year contract, at fault because he, like the rest of the cast, were brilliant with the rubbish they were expected to deliver. TPTB were the ones at fault with their lies and misleading the public into believing it was Robin Hood when they (1) took the focus off Robin and (2) killed Marian off.”

“It wasn't filmed in Sherwood Forest because the forest isn't as "foresty" as the one in Hungary; also, there was the castle, etc. The guys in charge thought the setting looked more believable.

I'm really glad they're not continuing this show w/out a Robin Hood; whoever heard of such a thing! It was bad enough they killed off Marian at the end of S2; that's when they should've ended it.

I completely agree w/brittvfan's comments: spot on!”

“Thank you for the opportunity to express my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed Series 1 and portions of Series 2. It would have been nice if the BBC, Tiger Aspect and BBCA (who partially financed the program) had put the money they spent on high-priced guest stars into better scripts, a continuity person and research. The original cast did their best but at times it seemed that the BBC and TA were doing everything possible to destroy what was fun entertainment. I didn't mind the "Playstation Generation" slant until it became insulting to that Generation, e.g., a Vegas-style gambling casino in 12 century England.
The relegation of the central character, ably portrayed by Jonas Armstrong, to a supporting role in order to spotlight Sir Guy of Gisborne was the worst decision made by the Executive Producers/Co-Creators. They apparently forgot or did not know that the Legend was about Robin Hood, not the Sheriff's lieutenant-in-charge of murder and mayhem.
Arguably one of the worst scenes in episodic television was the brutal murder of Lady Marian by SGofG, whom we were then expected to sympathize with as he struggled through his grief, angst and guilt. (One does feel sympathy for Richard Armitage who played the idiotically-written character, SGofG.) The scripting for the finale was glibly explained by Messrs. Allan and Minghella in a press release that I'll paraphrase - what the public likes most is Robin; what Robin likes most is Marian; ergo, we'll kill off Marian and see what happens. What happened was an outpouring of anger from the viewing public, especially as Robin Hood was supposed to be a "family" program aimed at all ages. This cavalier attitude was bad enough, but then the BBC aired the S2 finale during the Holiday season, when the kiddies were sure to see it.
At least Robin was allowed to speak a few lines about his grief over the loss of his wife in a couple of scenes in S3.
Series 3 was merely a 13 part promo for Series 4 except for the minute and a half scene devoted to Robin and Marian's reunion.”

“Absolutely fantastic news. A black friar tuck is the same as casting Prince William as Martin Luther King. There is dumbing down and then there is insulting our intelligence, and that is what TV and the mass media in general does, does insult our intelligence. The BBC don't seem to have characters in their dramas anymore, they have inflatables.”

“Glad this drivel is gonna be off our screens. I know there's very little concrete evidence that Robin Hood even existed but we love the myth in Nottingham. The BBC just re-wrote the whole thing through their leftist eyes. No Friar Tuck? We've got pubs n chippy's named after him! oooh but can't have a christian man in the story, it would upset the muslims..... so lets throw a few muslims into the story anyway! Nothing against muslims at all b4 you all start but they weren't in the books and films while I was growing up. Hate the BBC, managed to send most of its staff to Glastonbury on our money but sent less staff to the olympics, and booked all the hotels out around glastonbury. We want our money back!!!”

“Kindly have the decency NOT to lay the blame for axing this show on Jonas Armstrong's shoulders. He honoured his 3-year contract brilliantly and flawlessly announcing his intentions when it was thought to be of only 3-year duration.
Try pointing the finger at those responsible who made the mistake and dreadful decision to write Marian out because that is when the show began to fail. S3 whilst brilliantly acted with the rubbish given to the stars, was never going to work so don't even think of pointing the finger at the stars who tried their level best with the tommy rot they were given - they excelled - try instead to fathom out why Guy of Gisborne took over Robin Hood from Robin Hood when he should not have.

Try instead looking at the Executive Producers, Writers, Tiger Aspect and BBC to justify why the legend was ruined and what on earth gave them the idea they could do better than re-write and wreck an 800 year old legend to the extent THEY did - don't go blaiming any of the actors. They were fabulous and should be applauded - however that doesn't say much in favour of The Powers That Be!”
