Robber attacks blind woman
A BLIND woman was kicked and punched by a robber who stole her handbag.
Nancy Needham had got off a bus near her home in Wood View, Edwalton, when she was grabbed and swung round.
"He hit me on the head, kicked and punched me and then grabbed my handbag," said the 55-year-old.
"I was shouting 'help me, help me' but no one came. I had my white stick so he probably knew I was blind.
"I heard him running off and then one of my neighbours came and saw the state I was in. She called an ambulance, wrapped me in a blanket and waited with me for it to arrive. She was really kind."
Mrs Needham, who has been registered blind for eight years, said she had £700, keys and a phone in her handbag when the attacker struck on Wednesday night.
She had drawn out the money to go on holiday with friends the day after.
"As I'm blind, going to the bank and withdrawing money can take some time and I didn't want to delay going on holiday so I took out a big lump sum beforehand," said Mrs Needham.
"I'd been out with friends in the city centre and got off the bus just before 11pm. The police officer who took me home from hospital said that whoever mugged me may have been watching me get off the bus.
"I don't want to live in Edwalton any more. I'm too frightened to stay at home. I've got a 15-year-old son and I'm living in fear for both of us."
A police spokeswoman said: "Fortunately these kinds of incidents are very rare in Edwalton and we would appeal for witnesses to contact us."
Anyone with information should call 0115 967 0999 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

“I would have thought that the fact that I find the NEP to be an incompetent rag would be a better reason to comment than simply nodding sagely along with a newspaper with which I happened to agree.
As for the Post just reporting the news, not creating it, I would suggest that you read the way they choose to report things a little more critically, particularly their rather nasty attempts to appeal to a lowest common denominator in trying to stir up a response.”

“FW. If you consider the NEP incompetent and sleazy why are you visiting and commenting on their website? NEP report the local news as it happens, they don't make the news!
I hope Mrs Needham feels better soon and manages to put this terrible ordeal behind her.”

“What is this strange fascination with anecdotes bemoaning the dreadful state of Nottingham. how bad its services are, etc, etc? Yes, bad things happen in this city and they are appalling, but actually many fewer than a lot of other cities if you look around. I guess there is just some weird masochistic delight in gratuitously urinating on your own carpet. And maybe not every city has a tabloid as incompetent and sleazy as the NEP to rub everyone's nose in it.”

“Why do people hasten to criticise the police, the moment a serious crime hits the media?...... Surely given the circumstances this poor lady has endured, we should all offer them our full support and encouragement !. Could it be that such idiots, have an unsavoury past to hide?......
Sadly, this despicable act on such a vulnerable lady, reflects upon life in Britain today. We should all be lobbying our politicians for change, to ensure that punishment is proportionate to the crime. Currently there is no effective deterrent, and crime appears to be heavily biased to the offender....
Unless such action is not forthcoming, then we shall all be living in constant fear !.
Finally, my thoughts are with the lady in question, and I pray that she soon recovers both mentally and physically.......”

“I think that every community officer in nottinghamshire should be made to sit and go through every ctv camera pictures in nottingham until this lowlife is caught. Instead of pathetic littering fines they should be earning their money. If this was done he would be soon caught. Then publish is name and address in newspapers, give him no police protection and let the community do its work.”

“I only hope that the scumbag that did this suffers at the hands of karma. If there were any justice in the world this lowlife would develop some terrible disease that cripples them with pain every waking moment.
I would start by looking at the bank cctv tapes, bit of a coincidence that she gets robbed at the moment she has so much money on her.”
