Road safety cuts will 'undermine' casualty reduction

ATTEMPTS to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Nottingham's roads will be "undermined" by spending cuts being imposed by the Government, it has been claimed.

A project to install new speed cameras on part of the Valley Road ring road through Sherwood later this year cannot go ahead because £155,000 of funding for new investment schemes has been lost.

Cameras on other parts of the ring road have helped almost halve the number of deaths and serious injuries.

Christine Moores, of Strelley, whose son Gareth was killed in a motorcycle crash on Valley Road in 2006, said: "You can't put a price on life."

The city council's road safety department has also been told it must also reduce its running costs this year by almost 27% – cutting £185,000 from its £695,000 total.

The operation of existing speed cameras, road safety education for children and plans for vehicle-activated speed signs could all be affected.

Francis Ashton, traffic and safety manager for Nottingham City Council, said cutting road-safety funding was a "false economy" and added: "It undermines our ability to reduce accidents further.

"It is estimated that every fatality costs £1.7m and serious injuries cost £160,000.

"So speed cameras and road safety measures have saved the wider community a phenomenal amount of money.

Transport minister Norman Baker said: "The scale of the savings required across Government inevitably means that there are clearly difficult choices to be made."

It has been proven time and time again that all speed cameras are nothing more than cash generation machines for the treasury, they have no effect, and actually increase accidents in most circumstances.

No, it hasn't. There, I can make unsupported assertions, too. Doesn't really advance the discussion though, does it?

Now, instead of just making up "facts," how about looking at data. There's http://www.nottspeed.com/CMS_content/items/DEC09.pdf for recent figures here in Nottingham, for example. Note how all those percentage changes in accident rates are negative since the installation of speed cameras. So, no, speed cameras do not lead to an increase in accident rates. You can, if you wish, argue endlessly about regression to the mean effects, and displacement of motorists to tother roads, but at least stop inventing "facts" that simply demonstrate you are not really interested in any rational discussion or evidence that might disturb your paranoid conspiracy-based world view.”

What is needed is effective policing from a Police force who can deal with a range of offences, this makes the roads safer, and is proven to do so, unlike speed cameras.”

“I P Freely. There is no need to take the pi@@ is there. I was making a common sense valid point. Your making out i think i am this perfect model citizen with your childish sarcastic perfect halo comment, when all i said was what was wrong with sticking to the speed limit. Ok heres a senario, dont know if you got kids but if you have what would you want to do to me if i ran your kid over while travelling OVER the speed limit? 3 words come to mind, 'keys' and 'throw away'. I am guessing you been caught speeding. I dont go round shooting people, stabbing people or robbing people either but just because i obey the law in that respect too doesn't make me think i am perfect. So tell me then, why do you portray me as this halo wearing person just because i dont do 40mph in a 30????? Its people like you who think just because you got a car that does 140mph your entitled to do so.”

“I am quite confident in assuming that everyone who call speed cameras 'cash cows' are the bitter ones who have been caught breaking the law. Its so easy to blame others for thier own stupidity and make out its some sort of conspiracy. If you stick to the speed limit, no problem is there, no points, no fines and no need to moan, SIMPLE. I drive alot and always stick to the limit applied, i have no problem in doing that whatsoever so why should anyone else. The people who say that because of cameras they spend too much time looking at the speedo i think either need more lessons or to get off the road completely. If you cant maintain a constant speed without moaning that its dangerous to do so get a push bike! Speed cameras are there for one reason and one reason only, to stop excessive speed related accidents, not stray dogs, not people pulling out on you etc etc. I dont mind if they stuck a speed camera on every road in Britain, i dont mind because even if they did that i would still have a clean licence with no fines to pay and why, BECAUSE I STICK TO THE LIMIT........Thoughts to the Moores Family.”

“You only have to read the comments below to see what most people think about speed cameras - maybe at last this cost cutting is part of a listening government!! .... and of course the Road Safety dept is going to winge and pour out the same 'H&S' style platitudes, they make good money out of the safety argument. Of course we need to be aware of road safety but cameras have become an extra road tax. When did a speed camera catch the drivers that cut you up, under take, drive inconsiderately......”

“i truely love the way the camera's were put up on valley road- a direct route to the hospital!!!!
wonder how many expectant fathers have been torn between the wife in the back screaming hurry the hell up and the camera's screaming get your wallet out!!!!!!
personally i think camera's are not helpful - don't know about anyone else but i tend to spend more time looking at the speedo that i do the road!
and as for 30 limits- they are soooooo boring- i have to stop my self sightseiing whilst going so slow as i get verrrry bored
i know speed effects the stopping distance- but this whole blame someone else generation is stupid- if you walk in front of my car expect to get hit- but no wait......no its ok cos the council will slow the cars to such a speed that even the flies bounce of the window screens- then you can walk out all you like and not get hurt- same goes for overtaking, pulling out of junctions ect- if the car is approaching WAIT ....apply this to the age old- you stay on your side and i'll stay on mine and accidents will go down- i fully agree its bad driving combined with impatient pedestrians that cause accidents....the speed just dictates if drivers can avoid a collision or not
and before anyone starts good driving includes driving at a speed suitable to the road and conditions- both too slow and too fast is an accident risk,as are pedestrians, cyclists, and those damn annoying bikes that think its ok to overtake right turning cars! not to mention loose dogs ect
but charging joe public for going 4 miles an hour over the limit whilst letting the car thiefs, non licence holders ect do as they please is not going to stop accidents- putting the police back in control so they can stop the driver and deal with the offence immediately was a much better plan which led to eveyone getting dealt with instead of just the licenced, registered car owners!!!!!!!!!!!
speed camera's are a money making scheme- nothing else
the camera put on calverton road near the school pretty much proved it for me- there has to my recolection only ever been one fatality on that road in the last 25 years- and that was a stolen car!- what there is thou is a blind bend at the bottom of a hill- which is absolutely perfect for catching people doing 35 mph!”

“Many statistics have been provided by numerous bodies or organisations with conflicting claims about speed cameras and there affects. Government figures have been proven to be contrived and manipulated.
It is now known thet road safety partnerships were told to massage their figures more than once with a threat of dissolving them if they didn't comply, losing the total revenue from speed cameras for local road safety schemes. Government conceded once, but not the second time and diverted revenue from local road safety partnerships directly to the treasury, this left many feeling it was a short term tactic to appease a wary public, and this was their intention all along.

Swindon turned off their speed cameras when they found they actually had a significant rise in accident blackspots where cameras were located, many independents undertaking impartial research showed similar results.
What is even more interesting is the accident reduction slowed since the introduction of speed cameras, bucking the national trend, showing many they were ineffective and cash cows for a greedy treasury.
With so many figures to digest it would appear that speed cameras did, or do nothing more than provide Government coffers with cash and are ineffective.”

“if the council is that interested in road safety why dont they transfer funds raised by their army of traffic wardens to top up the shortfall ? some people cant think outside the box, no wonder a fortune is spent on advisor's,”
