River Trent pollution "under control"
ENVIRONMENTAL experts say pollution in the River Trent flowing towards Notts is now under control.
The Environment Agency is investigating how untreated sewage and cyanide made its way into the river between Stoke-on-Trent and Yoxall.

Thousands of fish have already died and more wildlife is at risk.
The Environment Agency's Environment Manager David Lowe said: "This incident is under control - river water quality is improving.
"Levels of pollutant in the river have fallen significantly, but we continue to monitor the situation closely. As a precaution, people and animals should stay out of the water until further notice.
"We will thoroughly investigate and seek to prosecute those responsible."
The agency has been pumping oxygenated water into the river between Stoke-on-Trent and Yoxall to reduce the pollution levels.
Severn Trent Water has confirmed that cyanide entered the Strongford Sewage Treatment Works in Stoke-on-Trent.
This disrupted the treatment process, allowing partially treated sewage to be released into the River Trent.
Under the Water Resources Act it is an offence to cause poisonous, noxious or polluting matter to enter rivers.

“Daleabb, Nottingham
Its got nothing to do with new housing, you have no idea of what you are talking about.
It was also nothing to do with STW but someone ilegally dumping waste into the system, whether by accident or design, its not yet known.”

“The problem was cyanide killing off the organisms/bacteria treating the sewage...nothing to do with size of housing estates.”
