Review: The Wizard Of Oz, Nottingham Playhouse
Audiences will be blown away by this vibrant reimagining of Frank Baum's immortal fantasy which is adapted with skill and style to suit the contemporary stage..
Carlton Operatic Society doesn't do things by halves and Co-directors Lindsey Jaycock and Cat Orton bring out Amateur Theatre's big guns ,Simon Theobald,Graham Ward and Jonathan Allen to play Dorothy's hapless companions Cowardly Lion,Tinman and Scarecrow.

Carlton Operatic Society's The Wizard Of Oz runs at Nottingham Playhouse until Saturday
The talented trio ,playing an allegorical representation of human weakness are quite magnificent, bringing humour, pathos and individual qualities to the fore.
Undoubtedly Judy Garland's Dorothy can never be bettered but impressive teenager Jessica Nicklin, who brings vulnerability and precociousness to a demanding role, shows all the hallmarks of a future star.
Just for good measure the Society casts the delightful Denise Palin as Good Witch Glinda and unleashes the brilliant Nicola Bilton as her sister the fearsome and vengeful Wicked Witch of the West,a formidable character whose blood curdling cackle would surely shatter glass!
An exuberant chorus with more than twenty children in exquisite, unique costumes ,cast as the dimunutive residents of Munchkinland and seniors cast as crows, trees, flying monkeys and residents of Emerald City contribute to the brilliance of this wizard show.
Musical Director Chris Rees and his orchestra deliver the show's iconic score ,Rachael Rees provides innovative choreography, and admirable teamwork from all involved makes this fabulous production a must see treat for all the family.

“I went to see this show last night, and wow, what can I say?! The cast were fantastic, and at times it was easy to forget that these people are not professionals. The lion, tinman and scarecrow played their parts beautifully, capturing each personality accurately and sincerely. Dorothy was quite honestly one of the best young performers i've seen in any Nottingham show for years. Her voice was powerful yet delicate enough to depict Dorothy's vulnerability. In my eyes she added the polish to the show that made it just perfect. The wicked witch of the west was definitely an audience favourite with people booing and cheering when she was melted! Well done all, am looking forward to the next Carlton Op show now!”

“i must say i disagreed strongly with Grace's comments above ... to be honest I was slightly apprehensive that, as wizard of oz is one of my all-time favourites, that Carlton Operatic wouldnt be able to instil the magic and wonder that surrounds this wonderful show ... however i needn't have worried.
the cast and chorus put on a stunning performance that made me book another ticket to come and see it again tonight!
the acting, physicality and overall presence of Dorothy¿s 3 friends is so convincing that i forgot i was sat in the playhouse and was transported right into the heart of Oz.
i was particularly impressed with the wicked witch and her cackle (my ears are still ringing) and her general stage presence as one of the ultimate baddies.
My last comment I have saved for Dorothy, the out and out star of the show ¿ having seen Jessica Nicklin performing in ¿Little Women¿ and ¿Sweet charity¿, I was very excited about her seeing her in role made so famous by Judy Garland ... and she did not disappoint. Her voice was note perfect, her stage presence fantastic and her acting flawless and not in the least bit pantomime ¿ definitely a future star in the making ¿ I am convinced ill be sat in an audience in the west end in a few years watching miss nicklin give another amazing performance.
Well done everyone, you should be very proud!”

“I enjoyed the musical at the Playhouse but I felt it was a letdown after their last production ¿The Producers¿. I enjoyed ¿The Producers¿ so much that I was excited to see the company and Simon Theobald perform again.
The lead characters had great chemistry and good voices (especially Dorothy). Simon Theobald (the lion) was filled with charisma and delivered a thoroughly confident performance, Johnny Allen (the scarecrow) was funny and a favourite of the children in the audience. Graham Ward (Tinman) may have been over shadowed by the others, but his performance was less forced and for me, the most endearing. Jessica Nicklin was obviously a competent performer but I didn¿t warm to her and her acting style did seem rather ¿pantomime¿, however Nicklin¿s singing was pretty much note-perfect.
The chorus of local children was wonderful to see and the having a real dog certainly excited the children. Overall I was disappointed after what I expected on the back of ¿The Producers¿ but I will attend their next production in the hope that they do something more edgy and less cheesy.”
