Review: Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Royal Concert Hall

LES Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was as usual, an entertaining night out. Choreographed by Creative Director Tory Dobrin, it was lively, hilarious and moving. Despite watching men in tutus with muscles, thick set waists and hairy chests; it was sometimes impossible to appreciate the comedy of the evening, as it was difficult to see past the mesmerisingly beautiful dancing.

The choreography was very cleverly arranged to allow for the inclusion of humour which arose from the intended mistakes, many of which from various 'divas'. One hillarious highlight of the evening, seemed for everyone, to be the solo performance by Paul Ghiselin's alias 'Ida Nevasayneva';an interpretation of a scrawny, feather-moulting Dying Swan. 

From humble beginnings in 1974, 'the trocks' have grown to embrace worldwide fans and regular tours. Created by a group of ballet enthusiasts for 'the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form', they first performed in the late shows in Broadway lofts. By mid 1975, their inspired blend of loving knowledge of dance, comic approach and the astounding fact that 'men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces', was being noticed beyond New York. Coverage in publications such as Variety, Oui and The London Daily Telegraph, as well as a Richard Avedon photo essay in Vogue; gave the Company national and international recognition.

With their colourful costumes and wonderful music, these incredibly talented dancers gave another fantastic performance for everyone to enjoy. It's easy to see why they draw audiences back, year after year. I can't get enough!
