Residents oppose new Tesco plans in Keyworth
RESIDENTS have handed out leaflets opposing plans to build a new Tesco in Keyworth.
Members of the newly formed action group No Tesco in Keyworth gave out the leaflets outside the Platt Lane Sports Complex in the village, where plans new store were being shown yesterday.
-

Many residents stopped to give the group their contact details so that opposition can be organised when a planning application is submitted, which is expected to be in a few months time.
Elizabeth Bennett, of the action group, said: "It will kill the village, all the small shops will close.
"People want this to be a community again and Tesco will rip the heart out of it."
The store will be about the quarter of the size of Morrisons in Gamston – larger than a Tesco Express but smaller than a superstore.
It boasts green design features promises to create 70 jobs and 70 car park spaces for the village.
Mark Harrison, a community relations consultant working on the project for Tesco, said: "This is not a Tesco superstore arriving in your village, there is no other store of this size in the country, it's a new generation of stores designed for small market towns or villages.
"We're confident that majority of people in Keyworth do theirn main food shopping out of the village, they're doing their top-up shopping or basket shopping in the village.
"This store has been designed to be small enough to fit in but large enough to accommodate a large weekly shop.
"If we keep people in the village to shop then there's a chance that they would continue to shop in the independent stores as well.
The site is an empty brownfield site, which was previously a garage. Mr Harrison confirmed the landowner has agreed to sell Tesco the land.

“we want the tesco in keyworth it will bring people in to the village which will benifit other retailers. it brings jobs for local people and why should'nt we have cheaper shopping without getting in the car and truging round asda or morrisons. there are alot of people in keyworth who are less abled and would like the chance to shop at a tesco without having to travel to for. tesco also plan a car park which more than can be said for south wolds school they use church drive as there car park.
what would all these who are against the tesco want there because the planers are going to say yes to something one day and there no telling what the next thing will be”

“They should build a tesco in keyworth all my friends and family agree that a tesco will be a good idea. I dont know anyone who doesnt want a tesco here if they dont build one the land will just remain derelict like it has done for years the current supermarkets dont provide enough quality goods this is a perfect place for tesco”

“I agree with the first person to comment here on the Tesocfication of Keyworth. It is worth having a look what the BBC and the Evening Post have reported about Tesco's mindset and tactics:

“As a parent i welcome Tesco to keyworth. it will provide and value for money on food goods. Pluss rising fuel costs are making it difficult to evern think about a trip to Asda and Morrisons. i rely on big chains to be able to feed my family on a tight budget. Any one who wants to join my quest in welcoming Tesco to Keyworth and add me on facebook (kris summers) and join my group welcome Tesco to Keyworth who's numbers grow every day. thankyou for reading.”

“Those few deluded souls who seem to think that Keyworth needs a Tesco need to open their eyes and put Tescopoly in google on their computors. You will see what Tesco does to local communities, the hearts that have been ripped out of local communities around the country. Tesco is completely different to any other supermarket. They have an aggressive attitude towards local communities and councils who oppose them. They do destroy local businesses - go on I dare you to visit Tescopoly and then write what you have in support of a Tesco in Keyworth.
Quite aside from this argument, what about the poor souls who live down Selby Lane at the moment. What about the blight on their lives that this store would bring. What about the ruination of their property value because no one wants to live opposite or next to a Tesco? If we really are a true community in Keyworth, shouldn't we all stand with them? Wouldn't you want the support of your local community if it was you? We already have more than enough choice in Keyworth, in terms of supermarkets. If you don't make a stand against this monstreous proposal, frankly, in my view you don't deserve a decent community like Keyworth to live in. Tesco were kept out of Bingham a few years ago because the local community stood together. If we do the same, we can keep them out of Keyworth as well.”

“I just don't think a Tesco or any other supermarket is need in Keyworth. They say it will create 70 new jobs but what about those which will be lost in the village when at least one of the other stores closes not to mention some of the smaller independent shops? What about the large delivery lorries Tesco will use trundling through the village, who wants those?
Affordable housing would be far better, especially for that particular site but I fear Tesco will almost certainly get the planning they need, as someone else said, they always do.
You can bet though that there will be another large supermarket development in the area in a few years time as 1200+ new houses spring up by Wheatcrofts and the 4500+ houses suggested for Tollerton eventually get the go ahead (the Council's can't resist the cash and Government housing pressure will probably force some development to occur....), so by then will Tesco need to keep their Keyworth mini store open if they get a sniff at a large superstore only a mile or two away? Who knows, but time will tell.
This new store is not need, I don't believe Tesco's bring extra quality to the produce you can already get within the village and in reality all they will probably add is a wider choice of toilet roll and Baked Beans. Do we really need that?
At the end of the day Tesco will build this store come what may, they've already put too much time, effort and money to simply walk away now and as mentioned, they always win.”

“It is naive to suggest that Tesco shoppers will visit the store, leave their cars there and visit the local butchers for a 1lb of sausages the florist for a bunch of daffs, the post office for stationery or the delicatessen for sandwich. When I read the Keyworth Village Plan 90% of respondents said they didn't want another supermarket. That's 57% of residents. I'm sure Liz Bennett can speak for herself, but I reckon from those figures she speaks for the majority in Keyworth. I challenge Tesco to survey every household like the Village Plan did and abide by the decision of the majority of those who live in what is still a pleasant place - but for how long?”

“Tesco has just got to be too big. In reality, it has exceeded what is a healthy size and become effectively an alternative Local Authority that has used high level barrisers to threaten local authorities until it gets its way. None of these organisations actually creates jobs, they grow by shrinking other peoples business. When they have settled in an area, it soon becomes academic whether you chose to shop at their stores as they have generally lain waste to genuine competitors. Individuality goes out the window, uniformity rules, not a good example for what the "free market" can produce.”

“Bob - No ! Tesco won't provide a "quality" alternative to Sainsbury's, The Co-op et-al already in the village. It will be inflated prices just like all the other outlying Express stores they have, but for this offering their Value range goods. You still don't seem to understand the physical infrastructure impact on Selby Lane either, including the Debdale House arguement that Bill Lawrenson has raised. I'll give one of the other 4 outlets already there only 2 years if Tesco opens in Keyworth. Next thing will be the aurgument that more houses can be built seeing as the increased local facilities can support new developments.”

“Yes Bob lets have some more empty shops or a few more takeaways and see what happens when the Tesco prices go back up and choice has disappeared.
Yes MadB I do believe in freewill but I also believe that communities should be protected from short term opportunism by the big companies. I would also like to know why the promised sheltered housing to replace Debdale House has been taken over to provide a Tesco?”
