A RESCUE centre has issued a warning to pet owners after all four of the dogs pictured (right) were abandoned within the space of a month.

All were pregnant and are thought to have been abandoned because their owners could not cope with the prospect of puppies.

The Staffordshire bull terriers – Sally, Duchess, Libby and Bonnie – were all taken into the care of Babbington Rescue, near Awsworth. Tony Sanderson, owner of the kennels, is calling on dog owners to get their pets sterilised.

"This is just shocking and very sad," he said.

"There are a lot of people actively breeding these dogs because they think they will get money for it.

"But there are far too many of them.

"It is especially cruel to abandon dogs in this cold weather."

Mr Sanderson said many people abandoned their dogs because they faced unexpected financial costs keeping them.

"Don't take a dog on if you don't understand what it is going to cost and unless you can afford medical insurance."

He said keeping a dog would, on average, cost £40 a week.

Sally was left at the rescue centre on December 20 and gave birth to five puppies just five days later.

"Luckily, all puppies are well and have been re-homed," Mr Sanderson said.

Duchess was left tied to the kennel fence on January 4 and gave birth to four puppies, which all died within a few days. Libby, believed to be around one year old, was taken to the rescue centre on January 11. She gave birth to three puppies around five days afterwards. But, Mr Sanderson said, due to her playful nature it was likely that she accidentally killed them by tossing the newborns around.

The most recent case involved a dog called Bonnie, which was taken in on January 18 and gave birth to her five puppies on Monday.

“It all right Mr Sanderson stating that all owner needs to get there dogs spayed and neutered as there are too many of them.

He needs to learn himself before preaching to others, he does not spay/neuter most of his dogs in the kennels before they leave and nor do they get a home check to see if the home is really suitable for that dog, you can easily go to the kennels and pick a dog and return within a couple of hours with photos of your garden and take the dog away. HOW RESPONSIBLE IS THAT ?

it alright for him to get free advertising of his kennels but he should be doing the basic animal welfare needs him self before slating others.

when they get paid between £8-£9 per day per dog from the councill to hold the stray dogs for the first 7 days you would think that standards would be better, and more to the point when his buisness is making a profit of £250,000 a year he has the money to improve but doesnt want to as he needs to get the public to feel sorry for the animals and to give them more money,

it's about time people realised this is not a rescue but a good buisness, thats why it is for sale for 1.1 million pound, it is a holding kennels for stray dogs that get paid to do that job, all people are doing by giving them money is adding to the value of the buisness for him to sit pretty when he retires.

there is no excuse at all, they should homecheck EVERY HOME, and EVERY dog should be SPAYED/NEUTERED.”

“How do we know these dogs' names? They must be really clever and can speak, in which case they should also know their addresses”

“If someone has a minimal weekly pay, for instance dole, and can't afford to buy food in bulk, which is the cheapest way to do it, then the cost may well add up to £40 per week. If you are buying pet food on a weekly, or if you're really dumb, daily basis, then can by can, pouch by pouch it is really expensive. I'm guessing that the person in the article is trying to appeal to low earners who are more likely to find themselves unable to care for a sick/pregnant animal.”

“It's about time people were educated on how to look after a dog, male and femail, before they go and buy one. If they were educated with the facts on animal care, they would know that animals mate and the femail gets pregnant with innocent puppies.”

“LadyJue - Mr Sanderson didn't say the cost of keeping the dog at the rescue centre was £40 per week he said "keeping a dog" which I took to mean for an individual owner. And if you do the maths, you will realise that when added together and divided by the number of weeks in the year the figures I gave, inc the kennel fees, do indeed come to £10.86 per week!

Emnotts - I was not trivialising the problem of abandoned animals, I was merely correcting what I thought was a misinformed statement.”

“After that article the only thing you can mention is that he said it costs £40 a week to keep a dog - Seriously.

£20, £30 or £40 - it doesn't matter the exact amount. The point is it costs money and people should be prepared for this when they take a pet on.

The people who abandoned animals should be punished appropriately!”

“You have to also take in to account the staff wages, heating and electricity cost plus the cost of caring for their puppies, you state you put your dog in kennels I'm sure it cost you more than £10,86 per week ?”

“"He said keeping a dog would, on average, cost £40 a week."

Really; £40? Until last year we had a dog and she didn't cost anywhere near that much. Her food and treats came to about £240 per year, her vets bills were about £25 per year and kennelling her when we went on holiday cost aorund £300 per year. That works out at just £10.86 per week and even if we'd had insurance it would still not have cost the £40 stated by Mr Sanderson!”
