NOTTINGHAMSHIRE spinner Graeme Swann took all four wickets on the opening day of England's first Test against India in Ahmedabad.

But after the hosts had finished at 323-4, he warned that England will need to ensure India's first innings remains below 450 if they are to stay in touch.

Virender Sehwag top scored for India with a run-a-ball 117 but once Swann bowled him, getting one to cut back, England hit back strongly.

Notts team-mate Samit Patel assisted on one of Swann's wickets, holding on on to a catch off Tendulkar.

Cheteshwar Pujara was still there on 98, but Swann believes early wickets can prove crucial on a dry wicket that could well deteriorate even further

Swann said: "It was a tough first session, the way their guys came out and batted.

"Sehwag was superb for the first two hours.

"We knew how he can bat, but that we couldn't let the game drift away

"I thought we did that by bowling with more discipline and straighter. I thought we won that session (after lunch).

"We bounced back well and it was nice to pick up some wickets.

"We will need to get quick wickets in the morning and need to keep them below 450.

"We will be batting last and that's what happens when you lose the toss.

"They have two very good spinners so we will have to bowl well."

In taking his wickets, Swann surpassed Jim Laker's 193 Test wickets to become England's most successful off-spinner of all time.

And Swann aid: "I am always saying I'm not one for stats, but when someone told me I was close to beating Jim Laker I was excited by it.

"When you are growing up you see these famous names from the game and you never dream you will emulate them, let alone go past their records. I am very honoured to have done that."
