FAMILIES in Notts are being offered the chance to save money if they choose to swap disposable nappies for real ones.

Notts County Council is promoting Real Nappy Week, which runs from April 16-20, and will offer £25 to people who spend more than £50 on real nappies.

The authority said it is keen to reduce the number of nappies sent to landfill, as well as helping families to save money as real nappies can be cheaper than disposable ones.

Richard Butler, cabinet member for environment and sustainability said: “Modern real nappies are surprisingly easy to use and wash and could save you up to £500 from the birth of a child to potty training.”

“Real nappies are fantastic, no more nappy rash from all the chemicals in disposables! The notion that they're less environmentally friendly than disposables is laughable. They air dry perfectly well, you can wash them in large batches at a low temperature. Do you realise how many skips worth of toxic chemicals end up in landfill if you use disposables?”

“Real ones sound romantic, but I know a few yoghurt knitters who tried them with very bad results for baby's skin and they went on to disposables and ended up with £50 of rags stored in the garage.”

“It has been claimed that, once the cost of washing and drying real nappies has been factored in, disposable ones work out cheaper and/or more environmentally friendly.”
