THE first trial run of new ticket barriers at Nottingham railway station began today.

Early morning commuters were arriving at the station and being asked to put their valid tickets through the machines to get access on and off the platforms.

Station staff were also on hand, monitoring the gates and helping any passengers who had problems getting through.

They are due to come into full use later this month.

East Midlands Trains estimates one in ten people travels on its services without a valid rail ticket.

The rail operator is making the investment as part of its franchise agreement, which started in November 2007.

Jarrod Clancy, 34, travelled into Nottingham station from Newark this morning.

After coming through the barriers, he said: "It went okay. I have a 30-day season ticket and I wondered whether that would be okay, and it was.

"I don't see how the barriers benefit me as I pay for my tickets. it is just another thing put in my way."

“To answer the question about the tram and car park entrance`s i`m informed that they will be putting manned barrier`s with 4/5 members of staff on them, i`m pretty sure that this will be filled in once EMT see wot happens at Sheffield station where they intend to close the footbridge and that is a public right of way and put barriers in.”

    “Lucy is right!

"Over the past few months I can't remember seeing a single idiot on the trains where as before they were far too common."

I too have certainly noticed a dramatic reduction in the number of idiots on trains recently. There was once a time when my journey to work consisted of being flanked by idiots: spilling their coffee, reading their books out loud, listening to low quality music on their stolen phones (drum and bass without the bass - now that's what I call music!).

As a normal person, I've enjoyed the more normalized environment. I've even gained the confidence to talk to people now and then on the train, safe in the confidence that they won't be some idiot who'll talk to me about how they commit benefit fraud.

Last week I spoke to a very normal person called Margret. She lives in Old Basford and was telling me about how she's got a badger problem in her back garden. I remembered that I saw this thing on a science TV programme about how badgers will stay clear of your garden if you get some males to urinate around the borders. However, when I told her she informed me that her husband and only son were killed 5 years ago in a car crash and so there wasn't anyone who could provide the urine.

But every cloud has a silver lining, we swapped details and I've been filling up used jam jars and sandwich bags with my urine ever since and I'm going to post it all off to her very soon because it's beginning to make my room smell.

Does anyone know of the best way to transport urine? I thought about freezing it, but I bulk bought 30 bags of potato faces and my freezer is dead full.

So hooray for less idiots on the trains!”

“"no conductor on the train" - is this possible? I don't think the trains are one man opertated ie no guard/conductor, who operates the doors etc?”

“Doug, if you're right then the whole thing is pointless. Any fair dodgers will come in from the car park, as will I if I'm running late and don't have time to queue for a ticket!”

“I think ticket barriers are good idea. I use the train every day in Birmingham where I go to university.

Over the past couple of years they've installed ticket barriers at stations and the number of idiots on trains has reduced massively. Over the past few months I can't remember seeing a single idiot on the trains where as before they were far too common. Obviously none could be bothered to buy a ticket and their absence leaves the trains a far nicer place for all us normal people.”
