QMC's apology over post-op death of Bulwell youngster
A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy with cerebral palsy died from an infection after a feeding tube fitted in hospital became dislodged in his stomach.
Nottingham's hospital trust has apologised for "shortcomings" in the care it provided. Staff say procedures have changed after the death of Ronan Gillott-Brandon on April 20 last year.

An inquest heard the Bulwell youngster started showing signs of distress after being fitted with a feeding tube at the Queen's Medical Centre six days earlier.
His mother Allison brought him to hospital several times but staff allowed him to be taken home again.
Ronan was rushed to hospital when he began struggling for breath on April 20, but died despite medics' efforts to revive him. The inquest heard the feeding tube fitted by a surgeon had become dislodged, meaning food started leaking into the abdominal cavity.
His cause of death was given as acute peritonitis, when the area around the abdomen becomes infected.
QMC officials have apologised to Ronan's parents after the death, which was ruled as accidental by Notts coroner Dr Nigel Chapman.

“no one will know the hurt or devastation or impact this has had on our family ,but mindless verbal attacks on some one that was not involved in what happened to our son is both pointless and child like, yet another example of pointing the finger ! what happened or nigal chapman investigated the situation caused by others , no one will know what happened or what was said in that inquest except us and those present , so none else can comment ! name and address will be supplied for any one wanting to discuss this further!!”

“David I don't think it is Andyman, he would never put there instead of their or be so crass. It is yet another impersonation I am sure. What has happened was a terrible tragedy and, despite that, Ronan's family are willing to come on here and speak up for the Coroner, what an example. I only hope that they will receive the support and compassion that they so richly deserve.”

“"how can there (apology) replace a young child."
I do not believe that that is what they are claiming to do nor intending to do.
Of course an apology cannot replace a life.
Why an earth did you make such a crass statement?”

“Sorry does not cut it, it is seemingly the same old apologies being repeated, how can there replace a young child.
Something needs doing as seemingly lessons are not being learned.”

“Nothings changed then? I went in for an op in 1996, had TWO anesthetists tell me I had a "small throat" and they had trouble with the tube they put down your throat the last time, but all would be ok as they new about it. and it happened in 1 in a 1000 people.
sure enough when I woke up I had been "vomiting blood" where the tube caught my throat, and I was able to pull all of the packing out of my ear and a needle from my foot, which I didn't even know was there! still CARING then I see? NOT! believe what you like!”

“Obviously Queens should recruit Jan and Ann then we could all sleep happily in our beds knowing that mistakes would never happen.”
