This is Nottingham

The crime figures published today reveal a welcome fall in crime in Notts.

Perhaps the most telling figure is that there were almost 10,000 fewer victims of crime last year in Notts, compared to the year before. That number gives meaning to the eight per cent fall in crime.

Falls in violent offence, burglary, vehicle crime, theft and criminal damage are particularly encouraging. These categories represent high volume crimes and improved performance in these areas means a real and positive difference in the lives of Notts residents.

However, overall the figures still describe a disappointing situation for the city and county.

Notts remains the third worst force area for the total number of crimes committed per head of population. Only residents served by Greater Manchester Police and the Metropolitan Police (London) fare worse.

Our crime rates are higher than those in other leading cities, such as Leeds, Newcastle, and Liverpool. Despite progress, in Nottinghamshire you are more likely to be a victim of crime here than in most other places in England.

For still too many people in Notts, crime is a grim reality.

But there is the prospect of further improvement. Concerted efforts and smarter ways of working have helped to reduce the level of burglary and car crime. That must continue. Now Notts Police is to put a focus on robbery and antisocial behaviour, too. Tackling yobs and robbers will not only improve the statistics but actually bring a greater sense of safety to Nottinghamshire residents.
