Climate Camp group involved in alleged plot to attack power station
SEVERAL of the people arrested over the alleged plot to attack Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station have links to a group named Climate Camp.
A Notts Police spokeswoman said all 114 people arrested are still being questioned.
The Climate Camp group was behind other protests at power stations, including Drax in West Yorkshire and Kingsnorth in Kent.
They were also involved in a demonstration against the building of a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
Police arrested the people, believed to be men and women from across the country, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass and criminal damage at a power industry facility.
The operation involved 200 officers from Notts, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and British Transport Police.
Notts Police have said it didn't affect their day-to-day work.
The spokeswoman said: "Police now believe the intended target was Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire.
"In view of specialist equipment recovered by police, those arrested posed a serious threat to the safe running of the site.
"The arrests were made at an independent school in the Sneinton Dale area of Nottinghamshire."
Police contacted power stations across the north and the midlands in the run up to Easter to warn them there was a higher than normal chance of protests over the Bank Holiday weekend.
A spokesperson for E.on, which owns the power station, said: "We can confirm that Ratcliffe power station was the planned target of an organised protest in the early hours of this morning.
"While we understand that everyone has a right to protest peacefully and lawfully, this was clearly neither of those things, so we will be assisting police with their investigations into what could have been a very dangerous and irresponsible attempt to disrupt an operational power plant."
It is not yet known why the protest was being organised, but it is believed it could be connected to E.on's plans to build a new coal-fired power station in Kingsnorth, Kent.
The arrests were made around midnight.
Residents said they saw officers arrive near the Bakersfield community centre.
Officers from both Derbyshire and Leicestershire police were both drafted in to help.
Both confirmed they are providing custody space for those arrested.
One resident told the Evening Post: "At midnight on Sunday I was leaving my house on Sneinton Dale when I noticed a long steady line of traffic coming towards and passing me on Sneinton Dale.
"For this time of night it seemed very strange, as the vehicles got closer and started to pass me I noticed every single one was either a police car or police vans.
"To my astonishment I counted around 20 plus police vans all one after the other with police cars at the rear of the brigade.
"The police cars blocked off the roads from Highcliffe Road junction to Ipswich Circus junction off Sneinton Dale and all the police vans were parked in between outside and around the Bakersfield community centre on Sneinton Dale."
Another resident said she saw more than 20 police vans around the community centre.
""The police jumped out and were running up to the school behind the community centre.
"Then the police brought out groups of people, who were singing 'We will be back again."
David Mellen, councillor for the Dales ward, visited the scene today.
He said: "I understand there was a gathering here last night about a power station but I am not sure which."
There were reports of police activity at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station later this morning, but Notts Police have not confirmed if this is part of the same operation.
It has been reported that it was a planned operation police had known about in advance, and that some officers had their leave cancelled for it.

“Don't be stupid, Lesley. Those things you mentioned are not the same as why these arrests were made.
If there was evidence or suspicion you were going out in your car to deliberately cause an accident then, yes, you should be arrested. Just going out in a car is not going to raise suspicion on its own, is it. It is said that these people were not going out just to protest. If that was all they were going to do I would back them.”

“Just getting into my car, so am I going to be arrested 'on suspicion' I may cause an accident by driving on the road. What a load of rubbish, they want to get on with arresting all the 'suspected' drug pushers and 'suspected' gun and knife owners. Oh sorry cannot do that it might infringe their civil rights, what about the right to PROTEST if you think something is wrong. Why didnt the protesters who 'welcomed' back our troops recently get arrested for 'suspicion to cause a riot'. Oh sorry they were just excersing their civil rights.”

“Derrick wrote
"The issue isn't about a bomb plot though is it madbadger, that's just something you have just made up off the top of your head again."
No, Derrick it is not a bomb plot. I was drawing a situation for you, where the police have evidence that a crime is likely to be committed, then arrests can be made. You seem to disagree. Do you make up your own rules in your head as to what consiracies should result in arrests?
Do you believe that people conspiring to break the law should be arrested, or not?
"What it is about though is some members of the public wishing to make a protest; and what makes it so sinister is that only the likes of Joseph Stalin and ZaNu Labour and their Police Farce would ever dream of arresting the protesters before they had even made a protest."
First of all, it does not look likely that all they were going to do was protest. I don't believe the arrests would have been made if that were all it were.
The police have evidence at least some of them were going to break the law.
What I like is a nubnp supporter backing people who believe global warming is real, something I believe that nubnp rejects.
No, the only reason you posted what you did is to have a go at the governement and the police, which is all you ever do.
As for bringing up Stalin I see you selectively leave out the nazis. I wonder why?”

“Referring to a power station as a "factory of death" is rather OTT. What if the electricity it produces keeps people alive at the QMC or keeps old folks warm in Winter ? More of a factory of life.”

“I think we all need to congratulate the Police and Intelligent Services whom have avoided a major disruption.
Clearly these people were not just wanting to walk and raise placards with anti-govt messages but had an intent of causing havoc to our region.”

“There was a much simpler solution to the problem,, if the the authorities had pretended the school heating wasn't working, they could have closed the school & sent everyone home like they usually do....sssimple”

“Since when does a power generating company, E.on have the right to assert guilt while investigations are still under way?
"While we understand that everyone has a right to protest peacefully and lawfully, this was clearly neither of those things, so we will be assisting police with their investigations into what could have been a very dangerous and irresponsible attempt to disrupt an operational power plant."
I would also make the obvious point that, in the light of the climate science, operating a power plant of this kind is also "a very dangerous and irresponsible activity" - at least it is without urgent and rapid plans for closure and replacement with cleaner power. In an article in the Guardian in February one of the world's leading climate scientists wrote about the proposed Kingsnorth Power Station, words that might equally well apply to Radcliffe on Soar
"The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired power plants are factories of death. When I testified against the proposed Kingsnorth power plant, I estimated that in its lifetime it would be responsible for the extermination of about 400 species"
Radcliffe on Soar is also a factory of death.”

“perfect description, but some do have full time jobs and do the things u do,, some just dont want to follow the path of obedience and want to destroy all obsticles in their way. after a while, they started to drift away fom the asbo,,leaving me to it. i lasted a while, tried my best in looking after the place, even kept up cleanin the gardens an painting the windows on the outside white, to make it brighter and attractive, but i ran out of paint. i had to let it go. so we did the council a favor an made sure it couldnt be used agen, cuz it'd be a waste to give it to the collectives, they had the sumac centre on gladstone street, for their organised plannings of protests and actions. some bad some good,, but all was to the same group of subgroups, they never did reach out to u lot, cuz they did it rong way. their frustrations and angers are in control and use it productively to create a tornado of information runnin thru ya tv's an radios, even websites an newspapers, they are not makin it clear for you, whether i like um or not, they doin it the rong way, and that raid was the point i needed to proove, its not worth it.
As for the groups of cyclists in nottingham, some random and some groups of ppl join up to have a nice ride around town. I dont need to be in a group to hold traffic up, i can do that on my own but i did enjoy some of the trips out thru town with ppl u knew havin a laugh an joke. its just abit of fun, every fortnight at a meetin place somewhere sumac should have info.lol,. Yes these are the trouble makers, the ones u speak of walkin the streets thinkin tat they are it are bored, nothing to do, no role model and definaly no sense of direction because of hardships within lower income families. parents not givin them enough attention and not suppling them with rules and respect which are needed. Its us people now who can make a diference the city needs to get together and unite, forget about these little groups wanting to cause mayhem in their paths, and get sencible, help out say hello to them first, you go and hang about in groups, u gain responsibility and duty , if we stand up to what it shuld be instead of going backwards and starting the circle agen. Whose going to set the example first, it definatly wasnt those protesters, they are goin to have people watchin them all the time, while we have the co operation of many many more people. i kno you want to, but something is stopping you from doin it. i wonder wat that is, tv, radio, supression, a good job or your family. We ALL need to stand up wats right, but do it the right way. i just need support then ill be on my way to guide these young 1s outa boredom and give them something to inspire to. this city is lackin loads of it, notingham needs to brighten up before it dies. All i can say is that i tried mybest”
