A HUSBAND who saw his wife hit and killed by a taxi has told of his heartbreak.

Martin Spilsbury was with his wife Pauline, known as Pol, when she was knocked down by the cab as she crossed a road near their Radford home.

She had always warned her children to be wary of the crossing.

The taxi driver, Nadeem Amim, 26, of Colville Street, Arboretum, has now pleaded guilty to causing her death by careless driving and will be sentenced next month.

Mr Spilsbury said: "Whatever sentence he gets it's not going to bring Pol back. You just have to hope that they are not too lenient on him."

Mrs Spilsbury, 62, was using a pedestrian crossing on Alfreton Road, next to the road's junction with Gregory Boulevard, at about 12.25am on June 6 last year.

Mr Spilsbury, 63, said: "I felt the draft of the taxi. She just shouted 'Mart!' That was the last word she said.

"All I was worried about was Pol. I did what I could. She had gone. I tried to wake her.

"It's hard to lose someone as quick as that. Everybody misses her," he said.

"I wish she would walk through that door now."

The couple had been married for 34 years and Mr Spilsbury said they were inseparable.

"We went shopping together, we cooked together," he said. "She never did anything on her own."

Speaking about Amim's upcoming sentencing, Mrs Spilsbury's daughter Kath said: "Whatever he gets I know it's not going to bring my mum back."

“OMG, it obviously was not an accident if the driver of the cab admitted to "death by careless driving" and i could tell you right now that my nana would not have crossed a road unless it was on green man. and as for it was her time to go, its never anybodies time to go like that, all that was on the drivers mind was rushing back to pick up another fair! its ridiculous how taxi drivers get away with so much! i would love to see the person writing the horrible comments deal with a loss of a VERY much loved one like this!”

“last 2 comments........are you taking the mick?......first!!! your the same person, second your a biased cabby, it does'nt matter if someone is standing close to the roadside, their on the path! it's your responsibility to be careful as you pass pedestrians, would you see it fit to drive at 30mph past a school at 3.30pm? if you have kids the answer will be no! simply because you know it takes a kid to slip close to the kerb and fall in the road, so why is this any different? we all know taxi's are breaking speed limits and jumping red lights because all they got on their mind is the next fare! especially late at the weekend, "it was her time, get over it" that's a joke! how disrespectful, bet your mothers proud of you! it's very insensitive to her loved one's, it wouldn't surprise me if in all the comotion that the "witness" passenger was driving past at the time in their own car and was arranged to say they was a passenger! could they be a freind or relative? of the driver? your all the dodgiest gits on the road, i flag a taxi every weekend and that's illegal for you to pick up on street, and in 17 years of being in a taxi late at the weekend, not one of you have ever! put your meter on, ever! and try to give a price upfront, also illegal, getting back to the matter at hand......shut your pie hole!!! KEYBOARD WARRIOR!!!!!!!!!”

“Come on people i think your forgetting that he was driving a green cab, they dont move like road cars and private hire cabs. you cant really put your foot down or accelerate at a great speed. everyone needs to exercise a bit of caution not just the drivers. ive seen so many people virtually standing on the road at crossings where buses and trucks and cars are just missing them by inches. It was an unfortunate accident and from what ive heard it wasnt a head on collision rather she was clipped via the side of the cab as it drove by. There was a passenger who would verify it was a accident. unfortunate indeed.”

by life is too short for regrets and what if's, In the temporary world full off false dreams

“It was a an accident. get over it. that was her time to go. No one is guaranteed to live till old age. dont you people see or realise everyone dies, young, old, rich, poor, black, white or brown whoever you are and where ever you are death is a reality we must all face and when its our time to go then thats it. Theres no point dwelling on what if's. it was going to happen regardless. The ladys day was that day and it happened via a accident that was just a means to inevitable event that was going to happen and no one could have changed it as it was her destiny preordined. Yes it is sad to lose a family member but wishing the same on someone is hardly the answer. It was a accident afterall. The taxi driver had a passenger who im sure will vouch for the fact it was an unfortunate accident.”

“Its about time that taxi's were fitted with tacographs like other commercial drivers.
Then the average speed and driving hours could be checked. They should also be banned from getting jobs over the phone, radio's only!”

“Taxi drivers speed around to get as many fares as possible and avoid getting caught because when they spot a copper with a speed gun, they radio the office and they then tip off all the other drivers to avoid the area.”
