EVERY metal memorial plaque in Ashfield has been marked with special liquid designed to prevent crime.

The SmartWater is invisible to the eye but can be scanned using an ultraviolet light for a unique code which is registered on a database.

Police anywhere in the country will be able to identify which plaque it is and where it has been stolen from.

The SmartWater is almost impossible to remove and can even withstand being burnt.

If a thief does try to remove the security chemicals, they risk spreading forensic evidence onto their clothes and any tools they are using.

The War Memorials Trust, Ashfield Memorials Group and Ashfield District Council have joined forces for the drive.

Ashfield District Councillor Warren Nuttall said: "The technology is very impressive and we hope it will help to protect our war memorial plaques."
