Plans for footbridge over tram crossing in Bestwood revealed
PLANS for a new footbridge over a level crossing where five people have died in the last four years have been revealed.
The crossing in Bestwood Village has been temporarily closed for six months while the plans are developed.

How the bridge might look
Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: “We are progressing the scheme as quickly as possible in order to restore the route over the railway and tram line.
"The decision to temporarily close the level crossing was taken in the interests of safety following a number of tragic incidents. We are grateful for the support of Nottinghamshire County Council in granting the order.

"We are committed to getting a structure in place quickly whilst also taking local opinion into account and have been working with the council and NET to develop our plans. We are also holding an open event to share our plans with the local community and would invite anyone with an interest in this project to come along.”
On November 28, Lindsey Inger, 13, of Bulwell, died after being hit by a tram on the tram lines.
Four years ago, Jean Hoggart, 65, and her grandson Michael Dawson, 7, died after being hit by a train.
And in September 2009, Janet Sawyer, 52, of West Hallam, Derbyshire, was killed after deliberately stepping in front of a train.
The event will be held at St Marks Church, in School Walk, Bestwood Village between 3pm and 7pm where the Network Rail team will be on hand to explain the proposal.
The planning application was submitted to Ashfield District Council today.

“The steps look as if they will present quite an obstacle to anyone other than the super fit. What precautions are being taken to stop people jumping off the bridge? It certainly looks questionable from the health and safety perspective. If this is the way forward why, when around 70 people are killed every week on the county's roads, are these bridges not being put up where pedestrians cross roads?”
