Sampled at the Horse & Jockey, Stapleford

THIS rich copper-coloured balanced bitter comes from Wentwell, reputedly Derbyshire's smallest brewery. Based in Chaddesden, this outfit started about two years ago.

Following the recent refurbishment at the Jockey, at last cask ale seekers in Stapleford have an independently-run real ale emporium to visit.

The pub has changed a lot from the early 80s when I frequented the place. The bar has moved, the decor's changed, the ambience has altered, and prices have increased – but, at just £2.30 a pint for Horse & Jockey Bitter, the 3.8% house snifter from Stabbo's very own Full Mash brewery, value for money comes to mind.

Ten cask ales are available alongside three guest ciders. Cold snacks are on hand too including mouth-watering sausage rolls from Bramcote butcher John Bodsworth.

Whatever your beer or bite preference, this rejuvenated "must visit ale house" is here to stay.
