Pint of the Week: Oakwell Old Tom
Sampled at the Moulders Arms, Bovill Street, Radford
OLD Tom is an extremely palatable easy-drinking full-flavoured mild type brew with a dry but pleasant aftertaste. At a modest £1.47 for a large helping, it must be one of the cheapest pints in Notts, with the exception of beers sometimes offered at a well-known high street pub chain.
The Moulders, a hidden away locals' local, is situated on a side street a stone's throw from the Alfreton Road/Hartley Road junction. Formerly part of the Shipstone's estate, this two-roomed boozer was a hive of activity a few decades ago, as were many of the pubs in the vicinity.
Although the décor is somewhat dated, the pub still has an old-fashioned family-feel about it with both the staff and regulars being friendly and welcoming. Karaoke, darts, and dominos seem popular, as is free pool on Thursdays.
I remember the Moulders from the mid-eighties when the Alfreton Road area was awash with drinking dens.
Known as murder mile, the name was adopted by locals as a challenge for drinkers to murder a pint in every pub along the route (ironically, the Wheat Sheaf, then the third pub of the notorious trail at the Bobbers Mill end, regularly held inquests during the mid 1800s).
