FUTURE stars of stage and screen could learn their trade in Nottingham, thanks to a familiar face from TV.

Actor Paul Nicholas is opening his own school at Djanogly City Academy.

The Paul Nicholas School of Acting will run for two hours every Saturday and will allow four to 18-year-olds the chance to build a successful career.

"It's recognised that there are thousands and thousands of talented youngsters who simply don't get the chance to shine because they live outside London," said Paul.

"I believe there is a host of them in Nottingham and it would be great to see them develop."

Paul is best known for his role as Vince Pinner in BBC sitcom Just Good Friends. He now spends much of his time producing top West End shows, including Jesus Christ Superstar and Grease.

His acting schools are open to people of all abilities. There are currently 25 of them in the country. Djanogly is the first in Nottingham. Students will be taught acting techniques, performance skills, voice training, singing and dancing.

"We have got two teachers who will be able to work with the students," said Paul. "Being able to act is a wonderful way to give them confidence.

"You don't often see five-year-olds with the confidence to stand up on stage. Even if they don't go on and choose acting as a career, they will be able to use this confidence in other walks of life. And it is affordable as well so money shouldn't be a barrier."

The school is holding an open day on April 11 for prospective students. Lessons start on April 18. Each two-hour lesson costs £8. Three scholarships are available.

Graduates from other schools have landed roles in programmes including ITV drama Echo Beach, the Billy Elliott West End musical and TV commercials.

Principal Margaret Saint said: "We want people to be able to come and enjoy it as well as learn. There is talent out there and we will be able to find them and help them become future stars."

Several pupils at Djanogly said they were already hoping to join the school. Tamsin Jones, 15, said: "It is great when someone like Paul Nicholas is behind it."

For information on joining the school call its head office on 01253 851144.
