NOTTS have gone down to a five-wicket defeat to County Championship title rivals Yorkshire at Trent Bridge this afternoon.

The hosts had fought back strongly on day two after a disastrous first day that saw them bowled out for just 59 in their first innings.

But, in the end, it was in vain as Yorkshire's strong batting line-up got them home in a well-judged run chase.

Notts began the day 152 runs in front and on 357-6 in their second innings. They added a further 56 in the first hour before being all out for 413.

That left the visitors, who scored 264 in their first knock, needing 209 runs for victory.

Adam Lyth (45) and Jacques Rudolph (29) gave them the ideal start as they put on an unbeaten 65 in the lead up to lunch.

But a flurry of wickets between 70 and 94, leaving Yorkshire four down, left Notts scenting an unlikely victory.

Rudolph was first to go as he drove Darren Pattinson to Ali Brown in the gully.

He was followed by Anthony McGrath (4), who gloved a lifter from the same bowler.

The seamer then made it three in consecutive overs when Lyth slashed to Alex Hales at first slip.

Andrew Gale (5) survived an appeal for a catch off Andre Adams in the very next over but just two balls later was bowled through the gate attempting to drive.

It was then that the key partnership of Jonathan Bairstow and Gerard Brophy came together to take Yorkshire to the cusp of victory.

The pair put on a 50 stand in just 43 balls with some positive stroke play and went on to add 97 in 15 overs in all.

Brophy (41) eventually gave Adams a second wicket, nicking through to Hales, but by then it was too late for Notts with just 17 more needed.

Bairstow (63 not out) and Adil Rashid (9 not out) ensured there were no further alarms to leave the visitors delighted and hosts despondent.
