Notts realistically surrendered the County Championship title to Durham at lunch on the final day of their clash with Hampshire.

With the north-easteners having wrapped up an innings and 71-run win over Kent at Canterbury, Notts now have to win at Trent Bridge.

But after Hampshire batted on from their overnight 376-5, Mick Newell's men needed a near-impossible 441 runs to win off 76 overs at a rate of 5.81.

And after losing Graeme Swann and Mark Wagh in just the fourth over of their second innings, and Will Jefferson immediately before lunch, their hopes of pulling off the ridiculous look over.

Swann (14) was bowled by Dimitri Macarenhas trying to hit the ball over the mid-wicket boundary while Wagh (0) edged to Sean Ervine at second slip.

Jefferson (24) then drove Mascarenhas powerfully but straight to James Tomlinson at mid-off.

That left Notts on 48-3, with Samit Patel nine not out.

At the start of play, Notts would have hoped that a new day would bring new fortune in the field, but there was not the hint of a chance before Hampshire declared.

The only real interest was when the visitors would call and end to their seconds innings and what total Notts would be looking to chase.

In the meantime, 18-year-old Liam Dawson moved to his maiden first-class century after having a previous top score of 38.

Dawson went to his half century from 105 balls, bringing up the 400 with a six over extra cover and another along the ground off Charlie Shreck.

The runs continued unabated and Dawson sped to his second fifty in just 48 balls, bringing up the milestone with a single from Bilal Shafayat.

That saw Mascarenhas bring an end to the punishment with Hampshire on 449-5.

Pothas had contributed 120 not out and the unbeaten sixth wicket partnership was worth 182.
