Centuries from Mark Wagh and Samit Patel have put Notts in firm control of their game against Surrey as they look to strengthen their County Championship title push.

Midway through the final session of day two at the Oval, the visitors had powered onto 288-2, scoring at a run-rate of 4.70 per over.

After bowling Surrey out for 267 in the morning session, there was a setback for Notts when Will Jefferson (5) was the first man to go with just 15 on the board.

But Wagh and Bilal Shafayat quickly set about repairing the damage either side of lunch with a second wicket stand of 95.

Opener Shafayat eventually perished on 44 as he was caught behind by substitute wicket-keeper Dan Euston – on for the injured Jonathan Batty – from the bowling of spinner Murtaza Hussain.

But that merely lit the touch paper as Wagh and new batsman Samit Patel cashed in against a largely inexperienced Surrey attack.

Wagh went to three figures from 148 balls with 14 fours and one maximum.

But though his strike rate was excellent it was nothing like Patel's who raced to his own hundred in just 89 balls.

That fantastic knock took only 99 minutes and contained no less than four maximums as well as 11 fours.

It was both players' second three figure score in four-day cricket this season. Wagh made his first against Sussex while Patel's came in the match against Surrey at Trent Bridge.

Surrey's appetite for the fight was undoubtedly not aided by being relegated earlier in the day because of other teams securing vital points elsewhere.
