BEN Davies is aiming to beat the career record 16 goals he scored for Notts County last season in this campaign.

The Magpies' midfielder scored his second goal of the season in their 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last night.

He said: "It's nice to score another goal. As an attacking midfielder, I have got to score as many as I can. It's a big part of my game.

"I feel like I can score more goals this season, if I get forward and get chances in and around the box."

Davies was frustrated his goal did not inspire a fightback at Hillsborough, as the Owls' midfielder James O'Connor scored twice in the opening 14 minutes to win the tie.

"We gave ourselves another mountain to climb. It's so frustrating. To be 2-0 down so early in the game is hard to take," added Davies.

"Aside from the first 15 minutes when we were nowhere near at the races, I thought we played well.

"I thought we passed the ball well and deserved something out of the game because we created some good chances.

"We had a few set-pieces that were inches away from being taken, and one skimmed the post.

"It's disappointing to go out of the competition because it is a good one, but we came up against a very good Sheffield Wednesday side, and made them look quite average at times.

"We are tearing our hair out about the starts we have made this season. When you give teams like Wednesday chances like we did they will score goals and punish us.

"The front two were good for them. (Marcus) Tudgay and (Clinton) Morrison were a different class.

"We stuck in there and I think we can take a lot of credit from the game."
