Charlie Shreck removed the dangerous Mark Ramprakash for just four in the first session of Notts' crucial County Championship clash with Surrey at the Oval.

The hosts reached 100-3 at lunch, meaning honours were just about even.

That was mainly thanks to Scott Newman (61 off 78 balls) who hit out after the Division One strugglers had been reduced to 29-2 early on.

Darren Pattinson removed Chris Murtagh without a run on the board before fellow seamer Shreck had Ramprakash caught behind.

A stand of 65 between Newman and Jonathan Batty (30 not out) boosted Surrey.

But Andre Adams snared Newman shortly before lunch to clinch a first batting point for Notts.
