NOTTINGHAMSHIRE'S women bowlers have won the national inter-county championship, the Johns Trophy, for the first time in 40 years.

They beat Oxfordshire in the final 106-104 on the opening day of the Bowls England Women's National Championships at Royal Leamington Spa after a nail-biting 120-119 win against Cornwall in the semi-final earlier in the day.

The rink of Sue Mart, Maureen Dixon, Angela Porter and Sylvia Offler led the way in both the semi-final and final – recording Nottinghamshire's only winning rink in the semi-final with a 36-12 win against Cornwall's Elizabeth Bray and a further 31-13 win in the final against Oxfordshire's Carol Penson.

Nottinghamshire's last win in the competition was back in 1969, when they beat Surrey. The county was last in the final in 1990 when they lost to Kent.

This year's victorious team contained five members of that team – Brenda Atherton, Sylvia Offler, Margaret Maidlow, Audrey Pinder and Mavis Osborne.
