STEVE Cotterill hailed the efforts of his wafer-thin squad after they continued their perfect start under his leadership against Chesterfield.

The Magpies secured a 1-0 victory at Meadow Lane last night and have now won the first four league games under Cotterill – scoring ten goals and keeping four clean-sheets.

Ben Davies' strike saw them climb to fourth in the League Two table, only one point outside the top three with games in hand.

The Magpies manager said: "They have been on a great run, they have been the form team in the league, and we've beaten them.

"We kept another clean-sheet to boot, which we're delighted about.

"It was a fantastic finish from Ben Davies, good enough to win any game.

"Ben has come into his own in the last couple of games. He was a bit quiet in my first two games but he was magnificent.

"They have all been magnificent. We've had four games in 11 days and we've been working with the same 13 or 14 players.

"I've thanked them all for how they have welcomed me and for their efforts because they have been first-class.

"We're going to shut them down until Saturday now."

Notts now hope to have their transfer embargo lifted by the Football League before the loan window closes later this month.

Cotterill has his targets but added: "It would only be to take the load off the lads already here."

And Johnnie Jackson will return to Notts County on Monday, after suffering a hamstring injury on loan at Charlton.

Cotterill does not intend to loan him back out to the League One club when he is fit again.

"He's coming back and I'm going to meet him on Monday and we'll have a chat about where we go from here," said Cotterill.

"First and foremost, we have to sort out his injury.

"He could be out for six weeks but, if we can get him in the oxygen chamber, it could be four weeks.

"We'll try to rehab him as quickly and as safely as we can and welcome him back.

"It wouldn't be my intention to loan him back out but I need to speak to Jacko."

“Notts midfield & defence were excellent, the forwards were poor & this was probably Hughes least effective game this season. The ref spolied a great game by his ineptitude. The yellow cards to Ravenhill & bishop caused them to think twice when tackling afterwards & let the Spirites back into the game...The standard of "reffing" has been very poor recently- however Notts are still able to win despite playing against 12 men...!!!
    C'Mon You Pies...!!!!”

“Great performance and result last night. Created good chances and largely restricted Chesterfield to just a couple of openings. Defensively excellent and that includes the whole team. Well done Notts, more of the same in front of the camera's please !”
